Historically, Wuhu's agriculture, handicrafts and commerce were quite developed. There were "towers" and "thousands of fireworks" in the Southern Tang Dynasty. Since the Ming Dynasty, it has gradually become an important commercial port in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Handicrafts such as sizing and dyeing are well known. In 1930s, civil aviation also opened flights to Shanghai and Wuhan.
