Introduction of A Smile for the City

A Smile for the City is a Hong Kong movie released in 1962, directed by Wong Hak-sing. It stars Lin Feng and Lin Jiaxing. A Smile for the City tells the story of King Yu of the Zhou Dynasty, who was in a state of mediocrity and was imprisoned by his loyal ministers. His son, Berg Hong De, in order to save his father from imprisonment, went to the countryside to look for a beautiful woman to offer to the King, and came across a village girl named Si, who, astonished by the beauty of the world, was returned to his mansion to teach him the palace rituals of songs and dances. Si has a heart for De, but De fails to meet her because of the state affairs. Si also has a deep sense of justice and follows De to the palace, and eventually lives up to her expectation and is favored by King Yu, who tries to release her father, who is finally freed. King Yu indulges in pleasures and neglects government affairs. In order to win Si's smile, he uses the beacon fire to play with the vassals, thus losing the hearts of the people. When the Inu Rong, a foreign tribe from the north, came to attack, King You ordered to light the beacon to call on his vassals to work for the king, but some of them refused to send troops to help because they doubted whether King You would play with the beacons again. De bravely retreats from the enemy, but the city is finally broken down and King You is killed by arrows. Prince Yishu succeeds to the throne and stays in the court to assist in the attack on De for his contribution to saving the country. The Queen of Shen wanted to marry De and Si, but they were forced to bury their love for each other.
