About the ethnic traditional culture of Guangdong Hailufeng area

Many of the cultural practices in the Hailufeng area can be traced back to the Central Plains and rooted in Zhejiang and Fujian, and some of the ancient folklore originating in the Central Plains, Zhejiang and Fujian are not easy to find in many places in the south, but they are prevalent in the Hailufeng area. Hailufeng region's positive word play, West Qin opera, white word play, shadow, rolling gold dragon five projects were promulgated by the State Council as the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage. The folklore here often becomes a valuable resource for experts and scholars to discuss cultural accumulation.

Folk opera is the most representative traditional culture and art in Hailufeng area. Since the Ming Dynasty, Hailufeng has preserved four ancient and rare types of theater known as "living fossils":

Chengzhi opera. Formerly known as Zhengyin Opera, the singing voice of Dao Bai are used in Zhongzhou rhyme, the main voice of the Zhengyin Qu and Kun cavity, with a small amount of Pihuang, ditto. It is believed that Zhengzi Opera was born out of Yiyangqiang. Yiyang opera is the Song and Yuan southern opera spread to Yiyang, Jiangxi, with the local dialect, folk music, and absorbed the evolution of the northern song, and then multiply and develop in all parts of the country. It is believed that Hailufeng had Zhengzhi opera activities in the early Ming Dynasty, and since then it has been rooted here and popularized in the eastern part of Guangdong, southern Fujian, and has traveled to Hong Kong and Southeast Asia.

West Qin opera. In the early Ming Dynasty, it flowed into the eastern part of Guangdong Province from southern Fujian Province, and when it arrived at Hailufeng, it combined with the local dialect and folk art to form the Hailufeng Bai Zi Opera with strong local characteristics. In order to distinguish it from the Teochew White Character (i.e. present-day Teochew Opera), the Teochew people called it "Hailufeng White Character" and "Nanxia White Character". The music of the opera is basically a combination of songs, supplemented by folk songs and ditties. Shadow play was popular in Hailufeng in the early Ming Dynasty, and in 1976, Lufeng County Shadow Players invited Yu Zheguang, the president of the Chinese Puppet and Shadow Art Society, to be their guide, and carried out a comprehensive reform of shadow play repertoire, singing, performance, and choreography, which was once a brilliant success.

In the Hailufeng area, for a long time, the word play, West Qin opera, white play three rare types of theater, in addition to the original state-run professional troupes, amateur troupes all over the place, a great spectacle, becoming a distinctive cultural phenomenon. The folk music of Hailufeng region is most famous for the orchestral music of "eight tones", Qu Ban and Blow Ban, which can be said to be derived from the art of opera, and together with the art of opera, create an extremely strong musical atmosphere. The lion dance includes the one-horned unicorn, the hornless "Shi Auntie", and the wooden lions of the Hakka region, collectively known as the "Dancing Tiger and Lion".

Additionally, the more famous ones are the "Rolling Golden Dragon" of Lufeng Daan Township and the "Dancing Elephant" of Hai Feng Fair. The "Rolling Golden Dragon" has won many shows in recent years. In the 1950s, the Qian drum dance was taught by an old man named Li Huoyi in Shanwei Township, and it has earned a reputation by dancing from small towns to county towns, provincial capitals and Beijing. Li Huoyi was employed as a librarian by the Provincial Museum of Culture and History for his merits in preserving and teaching the money drum dance and enjoys a life-time salary.
