Schubert (1797- 1828), an Austrian composer, is known as the "king of songs" in the history of European music. At that time, folklore believed that swans would sing the most touching songs when they died. Vienna music publisher Haslinger discovered Schubert's unpublished works shortly after his death. He thought that the fourteen songs he wrote six months before his death were all touching masterpieces, so he compiled them into a collection and published them under the name of "Swan Song". The fourth song is this serenade, composed by a poem written by Reebs Tabu at 1828.
Serenade is one of the last solo art songs in Schubert's short life, and it is also one of Schubert's most famous works. This song is composed of poems by the German poet Lyle Staber.
