Chapter 4
Tonia writes to Tania and pours out her heart. The only theater in town holds a grand party, attended by many of the Petliura faction of the squire community. Paul is escorted to power. Pavlyuk breaks in while the ball is in full swing and fights with Golub again over the music. There was a great deal of confusion. Rumors of "burning and looting of Jews" spread in the city, causing panic among many people, and Seryozha and others discuss where and how to hide. On the third day after the clash between Golub and Pavlyuk, the atrocities against the Jews began. For three terrible days and two nights, many people were killed and destroyed. But only a few resisted.
Chapter 5
One night, Juhlai hid in Paul's house to avoid a search. In Paul's house, Juhlai told Paul a lot of revolutionary truths. Paul learned the truth of life and that Juhlai was a ****producer. Soviet power is established, a local committee of the Ukrainian ****an Youth League is set up, and the Red Army captures the town of Shebetovka. Seryozha defies his mother and joins the Red Army, becoming a Bolshevik. He was a member of the ****Youth League and secretary of the district committee of the League. He also organized his partner and sister to join the ****Youth League. Paul joined Bujoni's cavalry. He fought bravely with thousands of soldiers. In Zhitomir, the cavalry rescued more than seven thousand revolutionaries from prison. The Provincial Committee sends Lida as a delegate to a county regimental congress and asks Paul to assist her. The station is crowded, so it's up to Paul to squeeze into the car first, then open the window and pull Leda in through it. A riot was brewing in the city. That night, Juhlai led 300 comrades to quell the riot. The Solomenka brigade lost five men, and the Lustration Committee sacrificed an old Bolshevik. Paul recovers from his wounds at home, visits Artyom, and goes to the square in front of the prison to pay his respects to the fallen Red Army. Then Paul goes to another city to look for his comrades. But many are gone, and in the end he finds only Pankratov. He and his family hated and were surprised to see Paul. He also tells Paul about all the things that have happened in the past four months. The next day, Paul went to the provincial committee of the regiment to restore his membership and spoke at the conference. After that, Paul went back to work at the power plant. He also argued with Tsvetaev about Fikin breaking the power drill. But in the end the two men come to an agreement. At work, Paul meets his former neighbor. At night, Paul also kills a robber.
Chapter 13
Paul accompanies the battalion commander on his inspection of the border, and together they go to Berezdov, where he declares that he will never smoke or swear again. Then he fell ill, left the factory, and returned home, where he recovered from his illness, took up the political work of the local armed forces, and quelled a fight. But there were some who woke up. Pankratov also gave a speech which encouraged the rest of the party and strengthened their resolve, but Dubois was still gone. Lenin died, and his passing prompted hundreds of thousands of workers to join the Bolshevik Party. Many industrial workers who dealt with steel and motor oil addressed the congress to join the ****production party. Arjom was one of them, who spoke about his experiences and was unanimously voted into the party.
Chapter 15
At the All-Russian Congress, Lida meets Paul and both are very happy to see each other. Paul tells Anna what happened when he persuaded Dubois to return to the regiment, and explains that he broke off his friendship with Lida a few years ago because he handled things in the same way as the hero of "The Gadfly".
