The movie "Red Peony" was produced in 1931 by Star Movie Co. Red Peony is a singer who has been trained in feudalism and rituals since she was a child in an old opera. When she grows up, she has the misfortune of marrying a rogue husband, and has been subjected to inhumane treatment. However, she abides by the Four Virtues and has no complaints. When she first became famous on stage, she earned a good monthly income, but it was still not enough for her husband to spend. Later, due to excessive stimulation, she lost her voice and was reduced from a leading role to a third- or fourth-rate supporting role, until she was so desperate that she still begged for her life and allowed her husband to abuse her. As the family is in financial difficulties and the husband has no money to spend, he forces Peony to sell her daughter, but fails to do so, so he lures her out and sells her into prostitution. A rich merchant who was secretly pursuing Hong Mudan found out about her and sympathized with her, so he bought her daughter back to his family. When her husband, who was upset by the sale of her daughter, committed murder and was arrested and imprisoned, she still treated him with sincerity and forgiveness. On the eve of her overseas performance, she made a special trip to visit her husband in prison. Later, she asked someone to rescue her husband from prison and finally made him repent and turn over a new leaf. This film is one of the first two wax discs with sound.
