Background
In the fall of 2010, Liu Huan was invited by director Zheng Xiaolong to compose the soundtrack for The Legend of Concubine Zhen Huan, while Liu Huan was still in the United States. When "Legend of Concubine Zhen Huan" was about to shoot the scene where An Ling Rong sings, the crew remembered that they should transmit the song samples. Because of the suddenness of the incident, Liu Huan entered the creation in advance.
On the day of the Mid-Autumn Festival, Liu Huan put off the party he had agreed to with his friends and started writing the song at home. In two days' time, he finished writing the interludes "Picking Lotus," "Golden Wisps," "Dance of the Frightened" and "Bodhisattva Barbarian," after which came the motifs and melody of "Phoenix in Flight" as well. But the recording of the songs was completed in the fall of the following year, after all the episodes had been finely edited.
