Complete works of ancient poetry: It is better to hold incense on the branches and die than to blow the north wind.

"It is better to wait for death in the branches with incense than to be blown down in the north wind". Cold Chrysanthemum by Zheng Sixiao, a poet in Song Dynasty, is the most classic poem. It means; Chrysanthemums would rather be on the branches, hugging together, emitting fragrance and dying, and will never be blown off by the cold north wind. From these two sentences, the poet further praised the noble character of Chrysanthemum, and at the same time expressed his view more clearly, that is, we should stick to ourselves and not be willing to bow and scrape.

This poem expresses ambition. The first two sentences describe that flowers bloom in bright spring, and the unique chrysanthemum stands in the fierce wind and frost, and does not compete with flowers. Then, the poet wrote that the flowers have withered, and only chrysanthemums stand in the cold wind, preferring to hug each other in the branches and die, with a fragrance that will never be blown down by the cold north wind. He used the nature of chrysanthemum to express his ambition, saying that he would rather die for upholding integrity than give in, showing the lofty integrity of "preferring death to surrender" and sincerely interpreting the poet's own lofty national integrity.

The whole poem describes the shape of chrysanthemum, which not only gains the spirit of chrysanthemum, but also surpasses it. While fully expressing the natural attributes of chrysanthemum, it also describes Zheng Sixiao's patriotic feelings, which not only shows the natural beauty of chrysanthemum, but also shows the poet's personality beauty, so that the naturalness and sociality of chrysanthemum images are harmonious and unified. This poem also has lofty aesthetic experience and profound philosophical implication, from which readers can gain aesthetic pleasure and life enlightenment.
