Introduction of Dunhuang boxing

Dunhuang is a treasure house of culture, whether it is Dunhuang murals, sculptures or red scrolls, its contents involve politics, economy, military affairs, philosophy, religion, literature, medicine, nationality, folklore, language, history, science and technology, etc. However, the content related to martial arts was not valued by the martial arts community until the early 1990s.

1990 during the city sports meeting held in Lanzhou, Xu Cai, chairman of the Chinese Wushu Association, thought that Lanzhou and Dunhuang were close and culturally connected, and it was necessary to combine Dunhuang murals with Lanzhou traditional Wushu to create Dunhuang Wushu and promote traditional Wushu, which added great confidence to Wang Degong, then chairman of Gansu Wushu Association. After nearly two years of theoretical discussion and careful consideration,1April 1992, the profound cultural connotation and colorful martial arts pictures of Mogao Grottoes deeply shocked the inspection team. What impressed me the most was the modeling of the martial arts images in Dunhuang murals and sculptures, which was the reappearance of the evolution and inheritance of China martial arts! The martial arts modeling of murals and sculptures is unarmed combat, also called "fist courage", which is the origin and basic form of China martial arts. There are many contents reflecting unarmed combat in Dunhuang murals, and the typical one is the "map-to-map" in Cave 428. The second is the martial arts dance, which has a large number of performances in Dunhuang murals, such as the "Lux Dance" in Cave 285 and the "Squat Shooting Map" in Cave 53. Third, fencing. There are many scenes with swords as weapons, and the most vivid depiction of swordsmanship is the Buddhist screen painting on the west wall of 6 1 Cave. The movements in the painting are vigorous and powerful, and the hands, eyes, body and sword are integrated into one. During the whole investigation, the most gratifying thing is the difficult movements, such as splitting, holding ding, sweeping legs, rolling sideways and twisting the oolong column. The martial arts elements, such as jumping and fighting, preserved in the folk fire in Dunhuang, or made by warriors when they beat lions, fully prove that Dunhuang martial arts originated from the folk and spread among the people. The most encouraging thing is the martial arts displayed in Dunhuang murals and sculptures, and many actions are quite similar to the local martial arts boxing in Lanzhou. For example, the palm shape commonly used in domestic boxing is that the fingers are close together, but in the martial arts of Dunhuang murals, it is basically a' eight-character palm', while Lanzhou boxing is a' eight-character palm', that is, the thumb sticks out. Another action, such as tiptoe slightly tilted and buttocks protruding, is the same as Lanzhou Boxing. ...

After the inspection, it is hard to copy, conceive, create, modify and perfect. How to combine the beautiful shape of Dunhuang murals with the implication of traditional martial arts to create a unique Dunhuang martial arts has become Wang Degong's unremitting pursuit. He took Dunhuang sculpture as the dynamic framework, competitive martial arts as the shape, Lanzhou Tuquan as the basis, Tongbei Boxing as the style and absorbed the characteristics of Tai Chi's continuous soothing. He adopted the method of soft transplantation and comprehensive understanding, learned from the strengths of many families and practiced repeatedly, and skillfully presented calligraphy, Asura's legs, four gods holding horses, flying flowers, fighting and playing the pipa in murals. Beautiful and elegant; The combination of rigidity and softness not only shows the majestic spirit of Dunhuang boxing in ancient western regions, but also contains the feminine beauty of the dance goddess. 1August, 992, the first set of Dunhuang Boxing was finally officially released. At the opening ceremony of the First Silk Road Art Festival in Lanzhou, China, a team of 160 people performed the second set of Dunhuang Boxing for Chinese and foreign guests for the first time, which became the biggest highlight of the first Silk Road Art Festival and won unanimous praise from martial arts lovers and Chinese and foreign guests. Later, in my opinion, Wang Degong further integrated competitive boxing, Lanzhou arm boxing, hanging boxing, somersault, octupole boxing, poking feet and other boxing methods, making it "like Dunhuang murals and magical traditional boxing methods", and successively created Dunhuang basic boxing, Dunhuang fitness boxing and other routines. The whole Dunhuang Boxing includes Dunhuang Boxing No.2 Road, Dunhuang Basic Boxing No.3 Road, Dunhuang Fitness Boxing No.3 Road and Dunhuang knives, swords, guns, sticks and shovels. Dunhuang Boxing is its mother boxing and the basis of its series of routines. Now, after more than 20 years of study, integration and communication, a complete, unique and magnificent Dunhuang Wushu system has been formed, which is based on Lanzhou Tuquan, supported by divided classes, characterized by long and short sticks, represented by Dunhuang Wushu and centered on various moves.

The martial arts that stood for thousands of years on Dunhuang murals finally stepped off the murals and benefited the world!
