Is it harmful to human body to use scented candles at home?

It is harmful.

Rukhulla masudi, a professor of chemistry at the University of South Carolina in the United States, and his team made a comparative study of odorless, pigment-free and dye-free candles made of petroleum-based wax (paraffin) or plant-based wax.

The results show that plant-based candles will not produce any potential harmful pollutants, while paraffin candles will release harmful chemicals after burning. If you light paraffin candles at home for a long time, you will inhale more dangerous pollutants floating indoors and increase the risk of respiratory diseases such as cancer and asthma.

Extended data:

A study by the University of Maryland found that incense candles also contain a variety of harmful substances such as acetone, phenol, toluene, benzyl acetate and limonene, which will interfere with the hormone balance in the body and increase the risk of diseases such as asthma, chronic lung disease and allergic reaction.

A research report of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency pointed out that burning candles (especially scented candles) is the main source of carbon and metal particles in indoor air, which may lead to excessive content of heavy metals such as lead in indoor air and pose serious harm to health.

Masudi pointed out that most candles are made of paraffin wax, which is the final by-product of petroleum refining chain. After burning paraffin wax, carcinogens toluene and benzene will be produced. These chemicals also exist in diesel exhaust gas, which can damage the brain, lungs and central nervous system, and lead to stunting of children.
