It is influenced by many factors such as nature, economy, history and society. With the development of cities, modern cities are formed and developed. According to the requirements of various functions on environmental, social, technical and economic conditions, in order to avoid the interference between industrial production, transportation and residents' lives, facilitate production and environmental protection, and make rational use of land and natural conditions, the city is divided into several functional areas according to certain functions.

Big cities in capitalist countries are generally divided into central business district, administrative district, industrial district, cultural (entertainment) district, residential district, warehouse dock district, recreation district and suburb.

The zoning of small and medium-sized cities is relatively simple or not obvious. Industrial area, residential area and commercial area are the basic functional areas of various cities, but sometimes the boundaries of each area are not clearly defined. The rational layout of urban functional areas is of great significance for promoting production, facilitating residents' lives and protecting the urban environment.
