Technical differences between coronary CTA and coronary MRA
Coronary CTA can not only provide information similar to interventional coronary angiography, but also detect non-obstructive plaque in arterial wall, and can also be used to evaluate non-calcified coronary plaque and atherosclerotic load and identify vulnerable plaque.
However, the clinical value of coronary CTA needs further evaluation. For patients without symptoms of coronary heart disease but with risk factors of coronary heart disease, coronary CTA as a routine screening method is still controversial because of the need for injection of contrast agent and ionizing radiation.
However, coronary MRA does not need contrast agent and has no ionizing radiation. Severe calcification has no effect on MRA imaging. Therefore, coronary MRA is more suitable for early screening of cardiovascular diseases than coronary CTA.

Clinical application of coronary CTA and MRA

Many research centers in Japan screened 138 patients with coronary MRA, among which 127 patients had good image quality and the success rate was 92%.
