College of Environmental Science and Engineering now publishes more than 400 papers (among them, 75 papers published in Chinese core journals, and nearly 20 papers searched by SCI and EI), publishes 18 books; obtains 5 patents for inventions; and receives provincial and ministerial-level scientific and technological progress awards, teaching and scientific research awards, social sciences research achievement awards, excellent natural science thesis awards, and the National Excellent Textbook for Environmental Education The university has won 15 awards, such as the National Environmental Education Outstanding Textbook Award. It has a significant impact on the higher environmental education sector in China. The college has delivered more than 4000 practical environmental protection professionals and technicians with solid theoretical foundation and strong hands-on ability to the society, which are generally welcomed by employers. In recent years, the employment rate of graduates has been maintained at more than 85%. "Environmental Impact Assessment", "Wastewater Treatment Theory and Technology" and other three major research directions, and gradually formed its own characteristics.

-The seriousness of surface pollution in the water environment has received widespread attention at home and abroad, and the study of surface pollution has become an active field of environmental research in the international arena. This discipline takes the surface source pollution control of Huangshi Magnetic Lake as the background and research platform, because Magnetic Lake is located in the center of Huangshi city, and its surface source pollution covers urban surface source and rural agricultural surface source, therefore, the research on surface source pollution control technology and the application of its results are more representative and extensive.

--Environmental impact assessment, as an important research direction in the discipline of environmental engineering, is tasked with systematically identifying, predicting and evaluating the impacts (consequences) that may be produced on the environment after the implementation of proposed construction projects, regional development plans and national policies. Research in this field is of great significance for the comprehensive implementation of the scientific concept of development and the construction of an environmentally friendly society. Since 1987, this discipline has been carrying out research and practice of environmental impact assessment for a long time, and it is one of the units that have been involved in the frontier field of environmental impact assessment in the early days of ″Environmental Risk Assessment″. It has undertaken more than 100 environmental impact assessment projects, completed five related provincial and municipal scientific research projects, published three related works, won one provincial environmental protection science and technology progress award, and one national and provincial ″Excellent Environmental Impact Report″, which puts the discipline in the forefront of similar disciplines in the direction of environmental impact assessment in our province.

--In the direction of wastewater treatment theory and technology, this discipline is based on the biological filtration and oxidation reactor small town wastewater treatment and resource utilization technology research, based on the biological filtration and oxidation reactor and other wastewater treatment process combination of medium and high concentration industrial wastewater (especially oil refining, coking wastewater) deep treatment and regeneration technology research, based on nanoscale wastewater treatment and regeneration technology research. Research on utilization technology, research and development of new membrane materials based on nano-scale photocatalytic degradation, etc. Some of the academic achievements are at the domestic advanced level, and some have reached the domestic leading level.

The cross-fertilization, integration, complementation and mutual promotion of the above three research directions constitute a complete disciplinary system of teaching and scientific research, which makes the construction of this discipline show a good development trend. This discipline has the following main advantages among similar disciplines in the domestic province:

(1) The environmental engineering specialty of our college was listed as a provincial key specialty by the Provincial Department of Education in 1992, and was listed as a key specialty by the Provincial Department of Education again in 2005. With distinctive features and remarkable results in practical personnel training, it has trained more than 3,000 graduates of environmental majors and specialties for the society, most of whom have become the business backbone of the environmental protection front. In Hubei Province, for example, about 30% of the environmental protection bureau chiefs, environmental protection research institute directors and environmental monitoring station chiefs of county and city environmental protection departments are served by the graduates trained by our college. The outstanding work performance of these graduates provides a good social environment for the construction of this discipline.

(3) This discipline holds the Environmental Impact Assessment Qualification Certificate issued by the State Environmental Protection Administration and the Environmental Engineering Design Certificate issued by the Hubei Provincial Environmental Protection Bureau. The Leading Group of Science and Education of Huangshi Municipality has awarded the discipline as "Huangshi Environmental Engineering Demonstration Productivity Promotion Center", and the construction of the discipline has been strongly supported by the national, provincial and municipal environmental protection departments and the local government. Cultivation Objective: To cultivate senior engineering and technical talents in the fields of urban water supply and drainage engineering, architectural water supply and drainage engineering, industrial water supply and drainage engineering, water pollution control planning and water resources protection, who are capable of working in the planning, design, construction, management, education and research and development in the governmental departments, planning departments, economic management departments, environmental protection departments, design units, industrial and mining enterprises, scientific research units, colleges and universities, and so on. This program is a key program in Hubei Province, and a pilot program of education reform of the Ministry of Education.
