Common diseases in Lusaka include malaria, AIDS, tuberculosis, diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, venereal diseases, measles, typhoid, and leprosy. According to government figures, the AIDS rate is about 21 percent, but Zanu PF officials privately say the actual rate is much higher.
Medical Facilities
Lusaka's medical facilities are rudimentary and medicines are scarce. Medical insurance is rudimentary. Hospitals are usually in poor condition and lack medicines. China has been sending medical teams to Lusaka since 1978, with medical staff scattered in various cities in Zambia. since the 1990s, the Chinese have opened a number of individual clinics in Zambia, but on a small scale.
