West Yunnan 1944 is set in the 1944 Mawankou area of Funing County, Yunnan Province, and tells the story of a small detachment of soldiers led by the national hero Chen Yi, who carries out anti-Japanese guerrilla war along the Yunnan-Burma border during China's war of resistance against Japan. The main characters include Chen Yi (male lead, a young and promising anti-Japanese war general), Yang Zirong (female lead, an underground party worker who pursues a new life and joins the guerrillas), Li Xiaofang (male supporting actor, Chen Yi's right-hand man), and Li Shutao (male supporting actor, a young and courageous guerrilla member).
The story takes place in the mountainous region of the plateau, where there are no supply lines, backward medical equipment, and bitter cold, but the guerrillas resolutely carry out the Party's guiding ideology, fight against the enemy, defend their strongholds, support friendly forces, and combat the Japanese.
