Innovation Shapes the Future
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s seventh annual National Sustainable Design Expo was held in Washington, DC. During the expo, attendees including scientists, engineers, students, government representatives and the general public experienced products and solutions that advance economic development and reduce environmental impact. Dow shared its sustainability experience and highlighted its innovations in solar, water, food, packaging, home and personal care.
Smart Solutions
As a leader in sustainable chemistry, Dow is committed to solving the most pressing environmental challenges. From harnessing solar energy to increasing crop yields to filtration systems that provide clean water, Dow provides solutions that help customers and society at large create a more sustainable world.
For example, Dow Global Technologies, LLC announced that it has developed a new, high molecular weight brominated polymeric flame retardant (Polymeric FR). This polymeric flame retardant is expected to become the next generation industry standard flame retardant and be used in the global extruded polystyrene (XPS) and expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam insulation fields.
Responsible Operations
Dow operates facilities in more than 30 countries on six continents with a total area of ??more than 10 million square feet. While seeking development, the company also continues to strive to reduce Carbon footprint, for example: at Shanghai Dow Center, water-saving systems in restrooms and outdoor showers reduce water consumption, and ice storage systems and heat recovery systems reduce electricity consumption.
Dow’s Houston, Texas, plant uses at least 90 percent recycled content in its construction materials; it also uses Energy Star-certified equipment and small windows with water sensors. Water-flow toilets to reduce energy and water consumption.
Green building features can be found throughout the Dow Tower in Sao Paulo, Brazil, such as energy-saving sensors and recyclable carpets and furniture.
Dow’s headquarters building in Michigan has a green roof with 16 species of plants that slow air flow, filter pollution, create a habitat for wildlife, and Can control rainwater runoff.
Donations in Greater China
On May 23, 2008, following the emergency donation of RMB 2 million within 24 hours of the Wenchuan earthquake in China, in the face of the escalating disaster and rescue needs, Additional donations were made to support post-disaster reconstruction efforts, and Dow employees around the world began voluntary donation activities to assist people in disaster areas. Dow's cash and material donations to the disaster-stricken areas have totaled nearly 10 million yuan.
From 2005 to 2007, we cooperated with the State Environmental Protection Administration of China (SEPA) to promote cleaner production demonstration projects across the country. In addition to investing RMB 6 million, it also provides Dow's global technology and experience.
