August 7, the Hong Kong SAR government news network released a message that the SAR government plans to build a two-story high temporary hospital through centralized support on a piece of land of about 3.2 hectares adjacent to the AsiaWorld-Expo, in order to provide a negative air pressure with a capacity of 800 to 1,000 hospital beds The hospital will provide negative air pressure wards with a capacity of 800 to 1,000 beds and related medical equipment to relieve the demand for public hospital beds.

Describing the new facility as Hong Kong's version of the Vulcan Hill Hospital, Chief Executive Carrie Lam said at a press conference on July 7 that it is expected to take several months to complete.

Carrie Lam also said the SAR government has made two specific requests to the central government, one of which is to add more beds at AsiaWorld-Expo. At present, there are about 500 beds in the pavilion, and the Hospital Authority will add 400 beds when needed. The SAR government intends to add about 1,000 more negative-pressure beds elsewhere in the pavilion, turning the AsiaWorld-Expo into a Hong Kong version of a square-bed hospital, and the conversion work is expected to be completed in a few weeks.

She said the enhancement of community treatment facilities was a proactive move to address the Hospital Authority's current difficulties and to prepare for future large-scale outbreaks in winter.

The HKSAR Government said that the square pod hospital teams in the Mainland have considerable experience in setting up similar treatment facilities, and the HKSAR Government has invited the Central Authorities to assist by arranging for the teams concerned to share their experience with the Hospital Authority, providing professional advice and suggestions, as well as supplying the relevant equipment such as hospital beds and temporary negative air pressure treatment facilities.

In addition, the HKSAR Government is arranging a videoconference between the HA and a team of experts from the Hubei Square Cabin Hospital next week to start exchanges and follow-up work.

The HKSAR Government said that the epidemic situation in Hong Kong continues to be serious, and expressed its sincere gratitude to the Central Government for its strong support to Hong Kong's anti-epidemic work and for providing the necessary assistance. Openness and transparency is one of the principles of the HKSAR Government's fight against the epidemic. Enabling the public to understand the framework of the work of the Support Teams will help to dispel any misunderstanding of the work of the Support Teams and facilitate the smooth implementation of the work. We hope that with the support of the Central Government and the cooperation of the public, the whole city will work together to fight against the epidemic and contain it as soon as possible.
