A graft is a medical device that replaces and serves as a missing biological structure (as opposed to a transplant, which indicates the transplantation of biomedical tissue). The surface of the graft in contact with the body may be made of biomedical materials such as titanium, silicon or apatite, depending on what is most practical. In some cases, grafts contain electronics, such as artificial pacemakers and cochlear implants. Some grafts are biologically active, such as in the form of subcutaneous drug delivery devices for implanted pills or drug-coated scaffolds.
