Surgery is the main means of treating many diseases, removing diseased tissues, repairing damaged places and improving the function and form of the body. Both major and minor surgeries require full nudity and the removal of underwear, so much so that numerous patients are embarrassed and wonder why surgery requires full nudity.
Why is it necessary to be completely naked for surgery?
Facilitating sterilization. In order to reduce the risk of infection, strict sterilization is required before surgery. The clothes the patient wears carry many germs and cannot be adequately sterilized without removing the clothes, which may become infected during the procedure and lead to unintended consequences. Surgical area needs. Sterilization is not just limited to the area where the surgery needs to be done, but is wider in scope. In the case of chest surgery, the entire area from the neck to the abdomen needs to be sterilized.
Medical equipment needs. Surgical process of anesthesia, blood transfusion or infusion, etc., need a special indwelling needle, usually tied to the elbow of the thicker blood vessels; due to anesthesia needs, the chest needs to be connected to the cardiac monitor, so the chest needs to be exposed; half anesthesia or general anesthesia need to catheterization, especially if the operation time is too long when the lower limbs need to be tied to the anti-thrombotic pumps, so the lower half of the body needs to be naked.
Nursing needs. In some cases, patients need to open multiple infusion channels to replenish fluids, and wearing clothes is too obstructive; throughout the operation, when using the electric knife, the electrode sheet needs to be attached to the patient's body in order to facilitate the normal use of the electric knife, and therefore need to take off their clothes. The patient will be catheterized for a long period of time, and the amount of rehydration fluid will be determined by the amount of urine passed. Keeping clothes on during the procedure increases the risk factor and decreases the success rate of the procedure.
Which surgeries require complete nudity?Cranial surgery. Craniofacial surgeries for traumatic brain injury, cerebral hemorrhage or ischemia, and brain tumors require complete nudity. Chest surgery. The same is true for major chest surgeries such as esophageal cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, and so on. Complicated orthopedic surgery. Knee replacements, hip replacements, and cut-and-replace internal fixation all require full nudity.
Larger abdominal surgeries. Removal of the appendix surgery, hernia repair, liver cancer resection, cholecystectomy, etc. need to be completely naked; and uterine mass, bladder mass or prostate removal, delivery via cesarean section, etc. also need to strip naked.
The operating room hypothermia is very cold, will be cold patients? The level of bacteria in the air is determined by the temperature and humidity in the operating room, which in turn determines the risk of post-surgical infection, so the operating room temperature is low. Usually the temperature is around 22~25℃, which is not cold. Besides, the patient will be covered with multiple layers of sterile surgical sheets throughout the procedure, by which the patient is kept warm. If the patient feels cold, heated blankets can be placed over the surgical bed, and in some cases the room temperature will need to be raised.
