Thomson's founder, Elihu Thomson, was an inventor who established Elihu Thomson's company in 1879, which later merged with Thomas Edison's General Electric (GE), and then merged with GE's Consumer Electronics Division in 1988 and replaced its own medical device business with GE, and from then on it has become a specialized manufacturer of video products. In the same year, Thomson acquired the local home appliance brand RCA in the U.S., and at the same time pocketed more than 1,000 patents on its color TV technology. the RCA brand has a huge share of the U.S. home appliance market, and is the champion of multimedia home appliance sales in the U.S.
