The First People's Hospital of Datong was founded in 1917 by Englishman Smiley, and it is the earliest hospital built in the north of Jin.
The hospital is located at No.7 Dacross Street, Datong, in the center of the city, covering an area of 21,030 square meters, with a building area of 34,800 square meters. This hospital with a long history and civilized tradition, under the care of the Party and the government, after nearly a century of hard work and pioneering efforts by several generations, has developed into a modern large-scale tertiary specialized hospital featuring gynecology, obstetrics and pediatrics, and integrating medical treatment, teaching, scientific research and preventive health care, and has become a collaborative hospital with the Beijing Maternity Hospital and the Beijing Children's Hospital. The hospital was awarded the title of "Baby-Friendly Hospital" by the World Health Organization UNICEF and the Ministry of Health in 1994, and has been awarded the title of "Baby-Friendly Hospital" by the Provincial Department of Health for ten consecutive years, and has been awarded the title of "Top Ten" by the Provincial Department of Health in Shanxi Province. It has been recognized as an advanced unit of "Baby-Friendly Hospital" by the provincial health department for ten consecutive years and ranked first in the "Top Ten" evaluation of Shanxi Province.
In recent years, due to the small size of the hospital, the facilities are outdated, has been far from meeting the city's women and children's medical needs, in order to solve the problem of women and children's health care, in the municipal party committee and the municipal government of the care of the new women's and children's hospital in July 8, 2009 finally broke ground. The design of the new hospital reflects the characteristics of women's and children's hospitals, focusing on humanistic care, science and environmental protection, digital intelligence and international standards, for women and children to provide a warm and comfortable environment. The new hospital covers an area of 208 acres, of which the above ground construction area of 102,276 square meters, including three ten-storey maternity, obstetrics and pediatrics inpatient building and four four-storey outpatient building, medical building, scientific research building, administrative building. Underground construction area of 15,806 square meters, a total construction area of 118,000 square meters, set more than 1,000 inpatient beds, with a total investment of 680 million yuan, is expected to be put into use in 2012. The new hospital focuses on green ecology, landscaping, green space rate of 40 ﹪, the hospital parking lot can put 560 motor vehicles, the new hospital in the new area of the Royal East, will become the first in North China, the country's first-class modern large-scale women's and children's hospitals will be better for the city's population of millions of people to provide high-quality health care services for the protection of women's and children's health.
