Architecture of Argos

Dorus built a temple in the style of Tauric columns in the ancient city of Argos in the sanctuary of Juno. Temple architecture is that which best expresses greatness, dignity and power. The naturally occurring subtle symmetries in each temple had an aura of divinity. Initially, there were three types of columns in temple architecture. The Tauric style was the first to appear and arose from antiquity. Dorus, the son of Helen and the nymph Orceus, ruled over all of Ahaea and the Peloponnese. Dorus built a temple in the Tauric columnar style at the sanctuary of Juno in the ancient city of Argos. Later, some temples of the same columnar style were built in other cities of Ahaea. The rules of symmetry had not yet been created. In search of a model, they turned to the human body itself.

When they wanted to set up the pillar in this temple, since the rule of symmetry did not yet exist, they explored ways in which it could be made suitable to bear the load and have an outward appearance that would be recognized as aesthetically pleasing. They tried to measure the length of the men's feet, comparing it with the length of their bodies. It was found that the length of the man's foot was one-sixth of the length of his body, and so they carried the same principle over to the column, taking six times the thickness of the base of the column as the height of the column, including the head. In this way, Taurik-style columns on the building began to show the proportions of the man's body strong and beautiful.
