A brief history of the School of Medicine at Qilu University, Shandong University

School of Medicine of Qilu University The School of Medicine of Qilu University was a college belonging to the private Qilu University founded by the Christian Churches of the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada.  At the beginning of 1864, the American Christian Church began its missionary work in China, and its Presbyterian missionaries, Mr and Mrs Calvin Mateer, opened the Wenhui Hall in Dengzhou (now Penglai City).

In 1883, the Presbyterian Church in the United States sent Dr. and Mrs. James Boyd Neal to Dengzhou, Shandong Province, to establish a medical work and a new medical education in connection with the Wenhuiwan, renting a few houses in a local temple, using part of them as classrooms and the other part as clinics, and recruiting the first class of medical students***5.

Early in 1885 (the end of the tenth year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty), the British Baptist missionary Dr. James Russell Watson and his wife, Dr. Agnes Kittermaster, went to Qingzhou and opened the "Baptist Baptist Church of the British Empire" clinic on West Huangcheng Street, which was based on the church's medical clinic. "On the basis of the Church Medical Clinic, the Baptist Qingzhou Hospital was opened on West Imperial City Street, together with the Qingzhou Medical Hall, which was an annexed medical hall. The school began to enroll new students, and used the teacher-apprentice method of teaching to start medical education.

In 1890, Nie Huidong was transferred from Dengzhou to Jinan, where he worked with Mr. and Mrs. Hong Stefan and Ms. Anderson at the church clinic on Huamei Street in Dongguan, and then expanded the clinic and named it the Huamei Hospital, and at the same time prepared for the construction of a medical school.

In 1891, the school was completed and named the Chinese-American Hospital Medical School, with an annual enrollment of five students. By 1902, the school had four classes of 22 students, all male.

June 13, 1902, held in Qingzhou, the British Baptist Church and the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America joint meeting, adopted a joint resolution "Shandong Protestant University", the formation of a "joint educational work basis" document. According to the document, qingzhou medical hall and jinan huamei hospital medical school jointly set up *** and medical school, set up qingzhou, jinan, zouping, yizhou 4 teaching points.

In 1903, the American Presbyterian Church in Shandong and the British Baptist Church formally Jinan, Qingzhou, Zouping, Yizhou medical hall merged into the "Shandong *** and Medical College" (Shandong Union Medical College), four-year school system. 1903 enrolled 13 medical students, and by 1911, the medical school in Jinan, Qingzhou, Zouping, Yizhou, the medical school jointly established *** and Medical College. In 1903, 13 medical students were enrolled, and 38 graduated in 1911***.

In 1909, Shandong Protestant University was renamed Shandong Christian University; Shandong **** and Medical College was renamed Shandong Christian **** and Medical College.

On April 17, 1911, with the generous support of the Leeds Ashington Foundation, the completion ceremony of the Shandong **** and Medical College was held, with Shandong Governor Sun Baoqi attending and donating 1,000 taels of silver, which marked the beginning of the merger of the four teaching centers in Jinan.

On Sept. 27, 1915, a ceremony was held for the inauguration of the **** and Hospital, and the students of the four teaching centers were all relocated to Jinan.

In 1917, Shandong Christian **** and University changed its name to Qilu University, and the medical department of Shandong Christian **** and University became the medical department of Qilu University, with a seven-year course of study.

In 1924, the Canadian government granted the Qilu University case, approved the Qilu University has the right to award degrees, at the same time, medical graduates are also awarded by the Canadian government approved the "Doctor of Medicine" degree, licensed Chinese students to study in Canada, the University of Toronto recognized the Qilu University graduates of the academic qualifications and qualifications, free of charge. The University of Toronto recognizes the education and qualifications of Qilu University graduates and allows them to enter graduate school without examination.

In 1925, the medical department of Qilu University was renamed the Medical College of Qilu University. Shandong Medical College In August 1932, Shandong Medical College was founded under the leadership of the Ministry of Education of the Nanjing National Government and the Department of Education of Shandong Province.

In August 1948, Shandong Province Medical College was renamed Shandong Province Medical College.

Jinan was liberated on September 24, 1948, and in November of the same year, it merged with the East China Medical College of Baiqiu'en.

On October 16, 1944, the New Fourth Army military medical school was established with the approval of the military department of the New Fourth Army.

On March 18, 1945, students were enrolled in the town of Xinpu, Huainan, and the inauguration ceremony was held in Changzhuang, Tianchang County, Anhui Province, on May 12th.

In January 1947, the New Fourth Army Military Medical School was renamed the East China Baiqiu'en Medical College.

In May 1949, the school was transferred to the leadership of the People's Government of Shandong Province and renamed Shandong Medical College.

In December 1951, the school was renamed Shandong Medical College.

In September 1952, by the decision of the East China Higher Education Faculty Adjustment Committee, Qilu University was abolished, and its medical school was merged with the former Shandong Medical College to set up a new Shandong Medical College, with its seat in the former Qilu University (No. 82, Nansinjie, Jinan City, now No. 44, West Wenhua Road). In April-December 1955, according to the National Departmental Adjustment Program, the Department of Hygiene and the Department of Pharmacy of Shandong Medical College were discontinued, and the teachers and students were enriched to other medical schools, Shandong Medical College became a single medical school, with 33 teaching and research groups (of which there were 18 teaching and research groups for basic medicine, and 15 teaching and research groups for clinical medicine).

In 1959, the school added the Department of Hygiene and the Department of Paediatrics; In 1960, the addition of biology, physics, chemistry, three specialties, in February 1962, and has been withdrawn, the students will be merged into the Department of Medicine.

In 1955, the school began to enroll graduate students. in June 1956, approved by the state, Shandong Medical College became one of the first batch of graduate students enrolled in the associate degree program in biochemistry, histology and embryology, clinical internal medicine, systematic surgery, otorhinolaryngology, dermatology and venereology.

In January 1959, the university set up a basic department and a clinical department. in May 1961, the clinical department was changed to a medical department; the basic department was abolished, and the office of basic medical courses was set up. in 1962, the basic department and the clinical department were restored. in March 1965, the basic department and the clinical department were abolished again, and the office of students was set up, which was co-located with the party committee's department of students' work.

In 1962, according to the opinion of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health, and with the consent of the Central Government, the existing five-year academic system of four specialties, namely, medical, pediatrics, hygiene, and stomatology, was extended to six years, and the four-year pharmacy program was extended to five years, and the Shandong Medical College was one of the first batch of 11 colleges and universities nationwide that carried out the restructuring in 1962.

July 1970, Shandong Province, the core leading group of the Revolutionary Committee decided to the province's higher education institutions for the removal and relocation of the implementation of the "five-seven" instructions, "facing the rural areas, facing the industrial and mining, facing the workers and peasants". Open Door Schooling". Under the guidance of this principle, it was decided that Shandong College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Shandong Medical College merged to form the new Shandong Medical College, and relocated to the Tai'an area of Xintai County, Lou Dezhen school, the school is located in the former Tai'an Agricultural School. Shandong Medical College set up four brigades, a brigade in Zaozhuang City, the second brigade in Qufu City, the third brigade in Xinwen County, the four brigades and the hospital headquarters in Loude Town.

November 20, 1970, the school resumed enrollment. 1971 class **** enrollment of 1069 new students, around March 10, respectively, in Zaozhuang, Qufu, Xinwen, Loude four brigades reported. In the second semester of 1973, the core leadership group of the Party of Shandong Medical College decided to withdraw the main force to Jinan, the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Department of Pharmacy moved back to Jinan for classes.

In 1974, the Shandong Medical College Loude Branch was established, and Shandong Medical College drew about one-third of its faculty and staff to stay in Loude to participate in the preparatory work for the Shandong Medical College Loude Branch. 1979 Shandong Medical College Loude Branch was moved to Tai'an City and renamed Shandong Medical College Tai'an Branch, and in 1981, with the approval of the State Council, the Shandong Medical College Tai'an Branch was renamed the Taishan Medical College.

In the second half of 1975, the former Shandong College of Traditional Chinese Medicine from the Shandong Medical College re-separated, moved back to the original site, to restore the establishment of Shandong College of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

In October 1977, the state resumed the college entrance examination enrollment system, Shandong Medical College resumed enrollment in the Department of Medicine, a five-year course of study. At the same time, the school resumed and added the health profession and dental profession, and recruited students in 1977. In this way, Shandong Medical College has 4 majors: medical, pharmacy, health, and oral cavity. During this period, the school set up the Department of Medicine and the Department of Basic Education, etc. In 1985, the Department of Medicine was renamed the Clinical Department.

In 1978, the school began to resume enrollment of graduate students, enrolled 41 students that year. 1986 began to enroll doctoral students.

In December 1979, approved by the Ministry of Health, the School of Medicine added a six-year English class in the Department of Medicine.

In May 1985, the Ministry of Health decided to change the name of Shandong Medical College to Shandong Medical University.

In April 1988, the school was approved as one of the 15 colleges and universities in the country that tried to set up a seven-year system of clinical medicine.

In October 1996, the school abolished the Department of Basic Medicine and established the College of Basic Medicine. Shandong University School of Medicine, Shandong University Qilu Medical Department On July 22, 2000, Shandong University, Shandong Medical University and Shandong University of Technology merged to form the new Shandong University .

In January 2001, the new Shandong University merged the School of Basic Medicine and the Department of Clinical Medicine of the former Shandong Medical University to form the School of Medicine of Shandong University.

In May 2012, Shandong University integrated five colleges, including the School of Medicine, the School of Public **** Health, the School of Stomatology, the School of Pharmacy, and the School of Nursing, as well as four affiliated hospitals, including the Qilu Hospital of Shandong University, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Shandong University, the Stomatological Hospital of Shandong University, and the Affiliated Reproductive Hospital of Shandong University, to form the Qilu Department of Medicine.

In September 2015, in order to implement the "Opinions on Medical-Educational Collaboration and Deepening the Reform of Clinical Medical Talent Cultivation" of the Ministry of Education and other six departments, and based on the "Constitution of Shandong University" and the "Comprehensive Reform Program of Shandong University", the university promulgated the "Implementation Plan for the Reform of the Management System of Medical Education", reorganized the management structure of the Qilu Department of Medical Sciences, and set up the Party and Work Committee of the Department of Qilu Medical Sciences. The Qilu Medical Department consists of the Office (co-located with the Office of the CPC Working Committee), Political and Industrial Affairs Office, Personnel Office, Academic Affairs Office, Scientific Research and International Exchange Office, Graduate School Office, Financial and Asset Management Office, Continuing (Network) Education Center, and Hospital Management Office, and other party and governmental administrative institutions. At the same time, the medical school establishment was abolished, the formation of basic medical school and clinical medical school.
