International assistance
Since the Sichuan Wenchuan earthquake, the international community has expressed sincere sympathy and condolences to the Chinese government and people, and provided various forms of support and assistance. As of July 18, 2008, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Chinese embassies, consulates and missions*** have received 1.711 billion yuan in donations from foreign governments, groups and individuals. Among them, 770 million yuan was donated by foreign governments, international and regional organizations; 19,925,000 yuan was donated by foreign diplomatic agencies and personnel in China; and 939 million yuan was donated by foreign civic groups, enterprises, people from all walks of life, as well as by overseas Chinese, overseas students, and Chinese-funded institutions.
As of 16:00 on May 17, six overseas rescue teams from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Russia, South Korea and Singapore had arrived in the disaster area to carry out rescue operations. Among them, 20 people from Hong Kong, 22 people from Taiwan and 51 people from Russia are carrying out rescue in Mianzhu City. Two batches of 60-member professional rescue teams from Japan are carrying out rescue operations in Qingchuan and Beichuan. South Korea's 47-member rescue team and Singapore's 55-member rescue team carried out rescue in Shifang City.
