1. Co-option of academicians takes place once every two years. The number of co-opted places and their distribution are determined by the Presidium of the Academic Department according to the layout of disciplines and the development trend of the disciplines, while maintaining the basic stability.
2. Candidates for academician are recommended by academicians and relevant academic organizations, and the Presidium may set up a special recommendation group for candidates according to the needs of the development of the academic disciplines, and does not accept applications in person. Valid candidates shall be finalized by the Presidium of the Faculty.
3. The Standing Committee of each academic department organizes academicians to evaluate and select valid candidates, and to recommend preliminary and final candidates. The evaluation and preliminary selection must adhere to the standards, follow the principles of impartiality and objectivity, and make a comprehensive and scientific evaluation of the candidates.
4. Scholars and experts (including scholars and experts of Chinese nationality residing in Hong Kong, Macao Special Administrative Region and Taiwan Province, as well as those residing in other countries) who have made systematic and creative achievements and significant contributions in the field of science and technology, who love their motherland, who have an upright academic style, and who have Chinese nationality and are researchers, professors, or scholars and experts with the equivalent titles, may be recommended and elected to be academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

In 1955, the first batch of members of the Academic Departments was 233. Among them, 61 were members of the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences; 172 were members of the Department of Science and Technology, and 18 additional members were recruited two years later, reaching 190.
The work of selecting additional members of the Ministry of Science and Technology was carried out from 1979 to 1981, and 283 new members were added, bringing the total number of members of the Ministry of Science and Technology to 400.
In the 1990-1991 election of additional members, 210 new members were elected, including 38 from the Department of Mathematics, 35 from the Department of Chemistry, 34 from the Department of Biology, 35 from the Department of Geosciences, and 68 from the Department of Technical Sciences.
