The film is based on a true story about a white doctor, Dr. Alfred Brealke (Alan Rickman), and his black partner, Vivien Thomas (Mos Def), who break racial boundaries and work together to pioneer heart surgery. (Mos Def), a white doctor who breaks racial boundaries and works together to pioneer heart surgery, becoming a pioneer in cardiac surgery. Dr. Blaylock, who is both ambitious and discriminating in his career, discovers Thomas's talent for medicine and begins to teach him about it. He chose to remain silent when Thomas suffered injustice because of the color of his skin.

The two men, master and servant, mentor and friend, maintained a delicate friendship over the course of their 34-year collaboration. When Thomas was finally recognized with an award, he silently gazed at the portrait of Dr. Blaylock and burst into tears.
