After being hot-plugged by me once the system could not detect the removable drive.

First you need to determine if the problem is with your removable drive or the interface.

First take it to another computer and see if the drive can be detected. If you can, please plug the portable hard disk into the rear usb port of your computer.

If it doesn't work, reboot your computer and then plug it into the rear usb port.

If it doesn't respond on any other machine, it's the drive itself. Or data cable problem. You can get it serviced.

Generally mobile hard drives are hot-swappable.
