Basic EMC Rules
Rule 1. Rules 1 to 13 are general rules, rules 14 to 20 favor limiting the emission of noise

Rule 5. Eliminate unwanted cable lengths to reduce coupling capacitance and coupling inductance.
Rule 6. Ground alternate cable/conductor ends for additional shielding.
Rule 7. In general, the proximity of line cables to grounded cabinet mounting plates may reduce coupled noise. Therefore, conductors should be laid as close as possible to the cabinet enclosure and mounting plate without passing freely through the cabinet. Treat spare cables/conductors similarly.
Rule 8. The tachograph, encoder or solver must be connected via a shielded cable. The shielding must be connected to the tachograph, encoder or solver and SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES via a large surface area. The shielding must not be interrupted, e.g. by using intermediate terminals. Pre-assembled cables with multiple layers of shielding should be used on the encoder and the solver (see catalog DA 65.10).
Rule 9. The shield of a digital signal cable is grounded at both ends (transmitter and receiver) by means of the maximum possible surface area, and if there is a lack of equipotential connection between the shielding connections, an additional equipotential connecting conductor with a minimum cross-section of 10 mm2 shall be connected in parallel with the shielding to minimize the shielding current. In general, the shielding shall be earthed in several places (cabinet shell). The shield can be grounded in several places, even on the outside of the cabinet.
Metal foil shielding is not used. It does not shield as well as the braided shield. Its effect is reduced to at least one-fifth.
Rule 10. The shielding of analog signal cables with a good equipotential connection should be grounded at both ends. A good equipotential connection can be obtained if rule 1 is observed.
If there are low-frequency noise sources in the analog cable, e.g. fluctuations in speed measurements due to equalization currents (AC sound), the shielding should be connected to only one end of the analog signal of the SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES. The other ends of the shield are grounded via a capacitor (e.g. 10 nF/100 V type MKT).
In any case, the shield should still be grounded at both ends, which has the same effect as a capacitor for high frequencies.
Rule 11. If possible, signal cables enter the cabinet on one side only.
Rule 12. If the SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES are operated from an external 24 V supply, this supply must not be used to power several separately installed units. This power supply cannot power several devices installed in separate cabinets (AC sound may be coupled!) This power supply must not be supplied to several units installed in separate cabinets (AC sound coupling possible!). Each SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES has its own power supply, which is optimal.
Rule 13. Prevent noise through power coupling.
SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES and automation/control electronics should be connected to different power grids. If there is only one public*** grid, the automation/control electronics shall be decoupled from the power supply using an isolation transformer.
Rule 14. Even if a sine wave filter or dv/dt filter is installed between the motor and the SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES, a radio interference suppression filter is required to maintain the "first environment" or "second environment" limits. The radio interference suppression filter must also be present to maintain the "first environment" or "second environment" limits.
Whether additional filters are required to be installed for the user depends on the type of control used and the cabinet wiring.
Rule 15. noise suppression filters should normally be located close to the source of the fault. The filter must be connected to the cabinet enclosure, mounting plate, etc. by a large surface area. Exposed metal mounting plates (e.g., made of stainless steel or galvanized sheet metal) are preferred so that electrical contact is formed through the entire mounting plate. If the mounting plate is painted, the paint should be removed from the inverter and noise suppression filter mounting points to ensure good electrical contact.
The incoming/outgoing cables of the radio interference suppression filter are spatially isolated.
Rule 16. To limit noise emissions, all speed-regulated motors are to be connected using shielded cables, with the shields connected to their respective enclosures (through the maximum possible surface area) at both ends in the case of low induction. Motor feeder cables shall be shielded inside the cabinet or at a minimum with a grounded bulkhead. Suitable motor feeder cables, e.g. Siemens PROTOFLEX-EMV-CY (4 x 1.5 mm2 ... 4 x 120 mm2) with copper shielding. Cables with steel shielding are not suitable.
A suitable PG liner with a shield connection can be used to connect the motor to the shield. It also ensures a low-impedance connection between the motor terminal box and the motor housing. If required, use an additional ground conductor.
Plastic motor terminal boxes must not be used!
Rule 17. The inlet reactor should be installed between the radio interference suppression filter and the SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES unit.
Rule 18. The incoming cable should be spatially separated from the motor feeder cable, e.g. by means of a grounding bulkhead.
Rule 19. The shielding between the motor and SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES must not be interrupted by the installation of components such as output reactors, sinusoidal filters, dv/dt filters, fuses, contactors, etc. All components must be mounted in a common ** space. The components should all be mounted on a common **** base plate, which serves as the equivalent of the motor inlet and outlet cable shield connections. A grounding bulkhead may be necessary for component shielding.
Rule 20. In order to limit radio interference (especially for the limit value class "first environment"), not only the power supply cable, but also all cables connected to the cabinet from the outside must be shielded.
