Causes of Water Pollution in Hong Kong, China There are basically three types of causes of water pollution in Hong Kong, China, including: i) Multiple Sources of Sewage In addition to naturally occurring sewage, domestic sewage, industrial and commercial sewage, and agricultural sewage are the major sources of sewage in Hong Kong, China. These sources are concentrated and produce large quantities of pollutants. Dredging and dumping of materials at sea also contribute to pollution. Hong Kong, China does not have adequate sewage treatment facilities. Only 34% of municipal wastewater receives primary treatment or above, while the rest is simply screened and discharged into the sea. In the rural areas, there are only septic tanks and no sewage treatment facilities. iii) Lack of control In the urban areas, there are still cases of illegal connection of sewage to storm water drains and then discharged to the sea.
