Criteria for classifying trucks

Trucks are classified into eight classes according to the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR):

Class I with a GVWR between 0 and 2,722 kilograms;

Class II with a GVWR between 2,723 and 4,535 kilograms;

Class III with a GVWR of 4,536 to 6,350 kilograms;

Class III and below are all counted as lightweight;

Class IV with a GVWR of 6351 to 7257 kilograms;

Class V is 7258 to 8,845 kilograms;

Class VI is 8,846 to 11,793 kilograms;

Classes IV through VI are considered medium-duty. Class VI and above are heavy duty.

Grade VII has a weight range of 11,794 to 14,969;

Anyone over 14,969 is in grade VIII.
