Introduction to Medical Institutions in China
The vast majority of medical institutions in China are public hospitals managed by the government, with a small number of privately owned hospitals, including some foreign owned hospitals/clinics. Atlas Insurance allows you to choose to be seen at any medical facility.
There are public healthcare facilities in both urban and rural areas of China. Large general hospitals and medical centers are mainly located in the cities. These hospitals are categorized into primary, secondary, and tertiary hospitals based on their level of care and resources. Tertiary hospitals are usually the ones with the highest level of medical care, followed by secondary and primary hospitals.
In rural areas there are government-run primary healthcare organizations, including community health service centers, township health centers, clinics, and village health offices. Typically, medical equipment in rural areas is simpler and medical staff receive less formal training than doctors in urban hospitals. They are sometimes less willing to see foreign patients. If conditions permit, you should try to get treatment at an urban hospital.
Public hospitals/clinics in China are open to everyone, including Chinese and foreign nationals. In general, visits to hospitals are usually on a first-come, first-served basis. Some hospitals in major cities are now accepting phone or online appointments, so you can make an appointment at the time you want to be seen.
When you go to the hospital, you will first have to wait in line and pay the registration fee. Then you wait outside the doctor's office. After the doctor's visit, if lab tests are required, then you will be given one or more lab orders. Go ahead and pay for it and then go to the relevant laboratory or imaging department and wait for the test. Some of the test results will be available on the same day and some you will have to wait for a few days to get them. If your doctor writes a prescription, then you can buy medicine at the hospital pharmacy. Pay for the medicine first and then pick it up.
According to China's national conditions, big hospitals usually have more patients and longer queues because of their higher level of care.
Please note that Chinese medical treatments such as acupuncture and massage are not reimbursed by Atlas insurance.

International clinics/hospitals
International hospitals/clinics invested by foreigners can be found in China's major cities, such as Beijing, Shanghai, etc., such as United Family Hospitals, Beijing United Family Hospital, Beijing International Medical Center, Shanghai East International Hospital, etc. These hospitals/clinics provide medical services to expatriates working in China. The level of care and services provided by international hospitals/clinics are generally in accordance with international standards. You can visit these international clinics/hospitals when you are insured by Atlas.
Doctors at foreign clinics have received their medical education and training abroad and are able to provide medical services that meet international standards. Foreign doctors are usually licensed to practice medicine in their home countries and certified to practice medicine in China, and speak English or other languages. There are also Chinese doctors who can speak Chinese and other languages.
Medical fees at international clinics are higher than at Chinese public hospitals. As long as the medical expenses are covered, Atlas Insurance will reimburse 100% of the cost. International clinics usually accept credit card payments. If you notify your insurance company in advance of your visit, they can contact the hospital to settle your medical bills.
Additionally, some tertiary hospitals in major cities have outpatient services for foreign guests. The medical conditions here are relatively good. The medical staff can usually speak English and Chinese and provide medical services to expatriates. You can visit a foreign guest clinic.
For payment, some major hospitals accept credit cards. Most hospitals require cash payment.

How do I find HCCMIS Insurance International Medical Network providers in China?
When you have a sudden emergency or injury while traveling in China, you can use Atlas International Travel Insurance to visit any medical facility in China. It is recommended that you give priority to HCCMIS Insurance's partner medical facilities in China.
HCCMIS Insurance has hundreds of healthcare providers in over 40 cities in China that are part of its EQUIAN International Medical Network. Most of these providers are foreign-owned or Sino-foreign joint venture hospitals operating in China, as well as large public general hospitals, and HCCMIS usually selects hospitals/doctors that have a good reputation in China as its partners to ensure high quality of care.
EQUIAN International's network of providers has a direct billing relationship with the HCCMIS insurance company. If you notify the insurance company in advance before you visit the doctor, the staff of the insurance company can contact the hospital clinic, and with the consent of the hospital clinic, the insurance company will pay the medical fees to it. In other words, when you visit a hospital in the network, the hospital can send the bill to the insurance company, and the insurance company will pay the medical expenses for the covered illnesses/traumas directly to the hospital. This makes it easier for you to use your insurance to see a doctor.
The insurer's EQUIAN International Medical Network has partner hospitals and clinics in the following cities in Mainland China: Beijing, Shanghai, Changchun, Changsha, Chengdu, Chongqing, Dalian, Dongguan, Guangzhou, Guiyang, Hangzhou, Harbin, Hefei, Hengyang, Heze, Huaibei, Jinan, Kunming, Nanchang, Nanjing, Nanning, Ningbo, Qingdao, Shenyang, Shenzhen, Shijiazhuang, Suzhou, Taiyuan, Tianjin, Wuhan, Wuxi and Xi'an. You can use the Language, Gender and Service Criteria tool to select a doctor's gender, language, and service category.
If you know the name of the doctor or hospital, you can use the Specify Provider Name Criteria to verify that it is a member of the EQUIAN international medical network.
Finally, click on the "Search" button to get the results. (See below)

The text on the HCCMIS search page reminds you to notify your insurance company before visiting a doctor. The insurance company's staff can contact the medical institution of your choice and, if the hospital clinic agrees, the insurance company will pay the medical expenses that are covered by the insurance. However, the insurance company does not guarantee that the medical institution found here will accept the direct billing arrangement for medical expenses.
If it's a general outpatient emergency, you don't necessarily need to notify your insurance company in advance, and you can pay the medical bills yourself before reimbursing the insurance company.
If it is a case of hospitalization or surgery, you'd better notify your insurance company in advance. The insurance company can contact the hospital to arrange direct billing of medical expenses to ensure that you receive timely and necessary treatment.

How do I pay for my medical treatment after seeing a doctor in China?
Most hospitals and clinics in China have a pay-before-you-see system. It's a good idea to bring enough RMB cash with you when you go to the hospital. Many hospitals do not accept bank cards. If you are in a rural area, clinics usually only accept cash, not bank cards.
HCCMIS Insurance's International Medical Network has partnered with medical institutions in many urban areas of China. When you visit a hospital clinic in the network, the hospital clinic can send the bill to the insurance company, and the insurance company will pay the hospital directly for the medical expenses under its coverage. You will need to notify the insurance company in advance to make arrangements.
Usually, when you visit an outpatient clinic in China, you will have to pay for your own medical fees, tests, prescriptions, etc., and then apply for reimbursement from your insurance company.
If you need to be hospitalized or undergo surgery, it is best to notify HCCMIS in advance. The insurance company's staff can contact the hospital and arrange for settlement of medical expenses. With the hospital's consent, HCCMIS Insurance can pay the hospital directly for medical expenses covered by Atlas Insurance.
After a visit to the doctor, it is important to keep your medical records, prescriptions, receipts, and itemized bills for medical expenses to use when applying for reimbursement from your insurance company. You can learn the steps to claim reimbursement of medical expenses here.
Atlas Insurance reimburses 100% of medical expenses for illnesses and injuries that are covered by its policy.

How do I get first aid for a critical condition?
The emergency number in China is 120, which you can call if you need an ambulance, and is mainly in Chinese. Emergency centers in some major cities can also provide services in English. Ambulances in China are usually quite simply equipped, so if you can't get an ambulance in an emergency, you can call a cab and go directly to the hospital. Large general hospitals usually have better equipment and medical staff.
According to Atlas Insurance, ambulance costs are reimbursed if the patient is admitted to the hospital.
Most of China's medical resources are concentrated in urban areas. Rural areas have basic medical facilities, but the level of medical equipment and staff is limited.
If a critical illness or trauma occurs suddenly in a remote area of China that could be life-threatening or result in loss of limb, and there is no suitable local resuscitation equipment and personnel, then Atlas Insurance can activate its Emergency Medical Assistance service, contact its emergency assistance partners in China, and arrange for the patient's immediate transfer to a nearby major hospital for resuscitation, using either ground transportation or helicopter.

How do I buy prescription drugs in China?
If you are purchasing prescription drugs, you will need to have a prescription issued by a doctor in China and then go to a pharmacy to buy the drugs. Pharmacies in China do not recognize your doctor's prescription from abroad.
Pharmacies are located in all areas and are usually marked with a green cross. You can go directly to a pharmacy to buy your medicines. Some medicines require a doctor's prescription. There are also pharmacies in hospitals.
Pharmacies in international hospitals/clinics in China can sell medicines imported from abroad.
For over-the-counter medications such as cold medicine, fever reducers, etc., you can go directly to the pharmacy; Atlas does not reimburse for over-the-counter medications.
If you have a chronic medical condition that requires regular medication, you will need to pack enough for the duration of your trip. The medications you receive abroad may not be available in China. It's a good idea to bring your doctor's original prescriptions with you, so you can show them to customs if you need to.
If you lose or do not have enough of your own daily medication and need an emergency prescription, you can contact HCCMIS insurance. Then you can contact HCCMIS Insurance's 24/7 Global Customer Service, who can assist you in getting your medication filled locally or elsewhere. You will need to pay for the cost of the prescription yourself.
It is a good idea to bring your own prescriptions or instructions with you so that you can refer to your doctor in China if you need to fill your prescription. It is a good idea to include the generic name of each medicine on your prescription. The generic name is the official international name of a drug and can be used worldwide. The same drug is manufactured by different pharmaceutical companies in different countries and may have different trade names. Providing the generic name of a drug makes it easier for your doctor in China to find a local equivalent for you.
Under Atlas Insurance rules, you will need to pay for your prescriptions yourself before you can claim reimbursement from your insurance company. You can learn about the process of how to get reimbursed for prescription drug costs and other medical expenses here.
