The T-54 tank evolved from the T-44, with the first prototype built in 1946 and put into production at the Kharkov Tank Factory (Харьковский Танковый Завод) in 1947. The Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, and Poland*** produced around 50,000 T-54/T55 tanks, about one-third of the world's total post-World War II tank production. Until 1981, the Omsk Tank Factory (Омский Танковый Завод) in the USSR was still producing T-55 tanks, while the T-62 tanks had long been discontinued.
The T-54/T-55 tank was used in the Middle East wars of 1967 and 1973, as well as in Angola, the Vietnam theater, and the Indo-Pakistani conflict. The tank has good armament and armor, relatively easy to use and maintain, easy installation of submarine equipment, and night fighting capability. The main drawbacks are the small angle of the gun, the rudimentary fire control system, the limited range of the gun, and the tendency of the external fuel tanks to catch fire.
Structural features
One, the overall arrangement
The body is a welded structure, the cockpit in the front of the body on the left, the combat cabin in the middle of the body, the engine and transmission at the rear of the body The driver has a upwardly lifted and rotated to the left to open the hatch, the cabin in front of the two periscopes, of which one can be replaced with infrared periscopes.
The front of the hull is equipped with a wave plate perpendicular to the front upper armor, which prevents water from splashing the driver's periscope when the tank is wading in the water. The front space of the hull to the driver's right contained ammunition racks, batteries and fuel tanks. The bottom deck of the hull behind the driver has a safety door that opens to the interior.
The turret is of cast construction, the top armor is made of 2 D-shaped steel plates butt-welded together and then welded to the top of the turret, which is located in the middle of the hull. The captain is on the left side of the turret, the gunner is in front of and below the captain, and the loader is on the right side of the turret. The commander had a command tower with a 360° swivel and a single hatch that opened forward. The ТПК-1 scope was mounted on the front of the commander's tower, which had four periscopes. The loader has a single rearward-opening hatch and an MK-4 periscope.
II. Weapon System
1. Main Weapons
T-54 tank's main weapon is a Д-10T type 100mm line-bored tank gun, which is improved for СУ-100 self-propelled gun. The Д-10T has a horizontally sliding breechblock, and its anti-recoil mechanism consists of a hydraulic parker and a hydropneumatic reentrant.
The gun is 5.608m long, weighs 1948kg, has a maximum range of 16,000m, and an average rate of fire of 4 rounds/min. Early T-54 tanks were not equipped with gun stabilizers, and T-54A tanks were fitted with high and low gun stabilizers, and the gun model was Д?10 ТГ-type.
The T-54B, T-54B, T-55, and T-55A tanks were fitted with Д-10T2C-type guns, and Д-10T2C-type guns, and T-55A tanks were installed with Д-10T2C-type guns. 10T2C gun with bi-directional stabilizers in the high, low and horizontal directions. Later, the guns and stabilizers of earlier models were modified.
2. Ammunition
The Д-10T 100mm gun can fire the following rounds: БР-412 armor-piercing rounds, БР-412Д cap-piercing rounds, ф-412 grenades, ОФ-412 pre-fabricated fragmentation grenades, ЗБК?5М tail-stabilized armor-breaking rounds, and БМ-8 tracer high-speed stripped armor-piercing rounds.
The T-54 tank carries 34 rounds of artillery shells, 3,000 rounds of 7.62mm machine gun ammunition, and 500 rounds of 12.7mm machine gun ammunition, while the T-55 tank carries 43 rounds of artillery shells and 3,500 rounds of 7.62mm machine gun ammunition.
3. Fire Control System
The fire control system of this tank is relatively simple. The commander operates the command tower and searches for targets with the ТПК-1 periscope. When a target is captured, the turret is mobilized to indicate the target for the gun commander, who then fires with precise aim. The gun commander has a ТШ2-22 scope with 3.5× and 7× magnification.
The "∧" mark is engraved on both the commander's and gun commander's scopes, and by adjusting the azimuth and elevation angles of the gun, the aiming mark of the relevant rounds on the scopes can be aligned with the target for firing.
The first to install night-vision equipment is the T-54Б tanks, and later on the early models were retrofitted. night-vision equipment of the T-54/T-55 tanks include (1) ФГ-100 infrared headlights and TBH-2 infrared observation periscope installed on the right side of the front mounting deck of the hull, which can provide drivers with a 40-60mm night observation capability; (2) ОУ-3 infrared periscopes installed on the front of the captain's tower; and (3) ОУ-3 infrared periscope installed on the right side of the front mounting deck of the hull, which can provide drivers with 40-60mm night observation capability. (2) ОУ-3 infrared searchlight and TKH-1 commander's infrared periscope mounted in front of the commander's command tower can provide the commander with a night observation capability of about 300mm; (3) л-2 infrared searchlight and ТПК-1-22-11 gun commander's night-vision scope mounted on the right side of the main armament can provide the gun commander with a night observation capability of 800-1000m. Early T-54s had turret rotation and gun tilt movements manually operated by the gun commander, but later models were converted to electric drive operation controlled by the gun commander's hand, with the manually operated drive retained as an emergency backup. ДШКМ type 12.7mm anti-aircraft machine gun mounted on the outside of the loader's hatch is used for firing into the air.
Three, the propulsion system
1. Engine
The tank is equipped with a transverse in the rear of the hull of the B2-type 4-stroke 12V60 ° water-cooled diesel engine, in 2000r / min at the nominal power of 382kW (520 horsepower).
The engine is driven by an electric motor as the primary starting method, with compressed air starting as an auxiliary starting method in cold climates. Since the T-55 tank was equipped with an AK-150 air compressor, which could provide a relatively constant pressure, its engine used compressed air starting as the primary starting method, with electric motor drive as an auxiliary starting method.
In order to increase the tank travel, in addition to the front and center group fuel tanks inside the vehicle, there is also an external fuel tank outside the body; there are four flat tanks on the right wing panel of the body, of which the first, second, and fourth tanks each have 93L of diesel oil, and the third tank is a lubricating oil tank, and there are also two additional barrel fuel tanks behind the body.
2. Transmission
The tank's transmission consists of a gearbox, main clutch, gearbox, fan linkage, planetary steering and side drive.
The fixed-shaft mechanical gearbox of this transmission has the advantages of simple structure and easy manufacture, however, the performance is poor. It can provide five forward gears and one reverse gear for the vehicle, and the maximum speed is 50km/h. The steering mechanism is a two-stage planetary steering gear.
3. Cooling system
The engine cooling system is liquid-cooled, airtight, pressure-cycled, and uses a coolant that is water in the summer and antifreeze in the winter. The cooling system consists of a tubular water radiator, centrifugal fan, inlet and outlet air shutters, and air ducts.
4. Mobility
The tank uses torsion bar suspension. Each side of the hull has five double-rimmed rubber load wheels, one front induced wheel, one rear active wheel, with rotary hydraulic dampers at the first and fifth load wheel positions, and a worm gear track adjuster on the induced axle crank arm to adjust the track tension. All-metal single-pin tracks are used.
5. Diving equipment
Early T-54 tanks are not equipped with diving equipment, then equipped with diving equipment, there are two kinds of diving cylinder, one is the actual use of small diameter diving cylinder, another is the training use of large diameter diving cylinder. The former when used installed in the loading hand periscope above, not used in the rear of the turret or the rear of the car, the latter when used installed in the loading hand hatch, installation and removal of submerged barrels need 15 ~ 30min. tanks submerged across the river is usually hanging first gear driving, and with the help of the car's navigational aids.
Four, protection system
1. Armor protection
Casting the turret has a relatively ideal bullet-proof shape; the hull is low, the armor plate has a good angle of inclination, is the tank to improve the survivability of the main measures.
2. Smokescreen
The tank was fitted with a thermal smokescreen applicator, which, when applied, formed a line of white smoke at the rear of the moving vehicle that lasted for up to 2min.
3. Triple defense
Three defenses were not fitted to early models but were fitted to later models, and were later retrofitted to the early models.
