In the beginning, Wu Yu and Shen Baoxu were friends. When Wu Yu fled to the state of Wu, he said to Shen Baoxu; "I must subvert the state of Chu." Shen Baoxu said, "Make an effort! If you can subvert it, I will surely revive it." When it came time for King Zhao of Chu to take refuge in the Suizhou State, Shen Baoxu went to Qin and asked for troops, saying, "The State of Wu is a great boar and a long serpent, and it has repeatedly invaded the countries of the Central Plains, and it is the State of Chu that is the first to be victimized. Our king, unable to defend his own country and stranded in the wild grass and forests, sent his ministers to sue for help, saying, 'The greed of the people of Wu is insatiable, and if Wu were to become your neighbor, it would be a danger to your borders. While the Wu people have not yet pacified Chu, you might as well go and seize a portion of Chu's land. If Chu falls in this way, the other part will be the king's land. If Chu is pacified by virtue of the king's mighty spirit, Chu will serve the king for generations to come.'" Duke Ai of Qin sent a man to politely decline, saying, "I have heard of your request. You will stay in the guest house and rest for the time being, and we will tell you when we have considered it." Shen Baoxu replied, "Our king is still wandering in the wilderness and has not found a place to rest, so how can I dare to go to the guest house to rest like this?" Shen Baoxu stood up, leaned against the wall of the courtyard and wept bitterly, day and night, without a sip of water for seven days. Duke Ai of Qin composed the poem "Without Clothes" for Shen Baoxu. Shen Baoxu bowed nine times before sitting down. Then. Qin went out to war.
Interpretation: 勉之，子能復之，我必能興之： Work hard! If you can subvert it, I shall be able to revive it.
If you pacify it by the spirit of the king, the world will serve the king: if you pacify Chu by virtue of the mighty spirit of the king, Chu will serve the king for generations to come.
The king's spirit was so powerful that he was able to appease the state of Chu with the spirit of the king. The Duke of Qin Ai gave the song "No Clothes" for him, and sat down for nine days, and the Qin division came out.
