I. Principles
The working principle of mercury thermometer is that mercury expands with heat and contracts with cold. When the thermometer is placed in the human body, mercury will expand with the increase of body temperature. By observing the height change of mercury column, the specific value of body temperature can be determined.
Second, the structure
Mercury thermometer is mainly composed of glass tube, mercury, scale and temperature ball.
Glass tube: usually transparent or graduated glass tube, used to hold mercury and display temperature.
Mercury: As a temperature measuring medium, it has good thermal conductivity and stability.
Scale: located on the glass tube, used to read the height of the mercury column, so as to determine the body temperature.
Thermometer ball: located at the end of the thermometer, it contacts with the human body, feels the change of body temperature and transfers heat to mercury.
Third, the method of use
Before use, make sure the scale of the thermometer is below 35℃, and hold the tail of the thermometer and shake it gently to return to the initial position.
Put the bulb part of the thermometer under the armpit or other suitable parts to ensure close contact with the skin.
Leave the thermometer for a period of time (usually about 5 minutes), and read the value on the scale after the mercury column is stable.
After reading it, wipe the mercury on the thermometer with a paper towel or cotton swab and put it back in the box.
Fourth, matters needing attention
Please check whether the thermometer is damaged or mercury leaks before use. If yes, please stop using it immediately.
When using, please ensure that the thermometer is in close contact with the skin, so as to avoid air entering the temperature sphere and affecting the measurement results.
When reading the ruler, please keep your sight parallel to the ruler to avoid making mistakes.
Please wipe the thermometer clean after use and put it back in the box to avoid damage or pollution.
Do not place the thermometer in high or low temperature environment, so as not to affect its measurement accuracy and service life.
Advantages and disadvantages of verbs (abbreviation of verb)
Advantages:
High accuracy: Mercury thermometer has high measurement accuracy and can meet the requirements of temperature measurement in medical field.
Good stability: Mercury as a temperature measuring medium has good stability, which can ensure the accuracy of measurement results.
Disadvantages:
Fragile: Thermometers made of glass tubes are easily broken, so handle them with care.
Mercury pollution: Mercury in mercury thermometers is toxic, which may pollute the environment if leaked. Therefore, special care should be taken during use and handling.
With the development of science and technology, electronic thermometers and other new temperature measuring tools are gradually popularized, and the use of mercury thermometers is gradually decreasing. However, in some specific occasions and regions, mercury thermometers still have certain application value.
