How do soluble microneedle transdermal drug delivery techniques work?

The most widely used and effective methods of transdermal drug delivery techniques are subcutaneous injections, topical cream applications and transdermal patches. The skin has a stratum corneum, which acts as a barrier for molecules, so most therapeutic ingredients are limited in their transdermal penetration, and only a few molecules are able to reach the site of action.

Microneedling, a new form of delivery system, helps to enhance drug delivery and overcome the problems associated with the use of conventional agents. The main principle is to penetrate the skin layers and create micron-sized channels that direct the drug/active ingredient directly to the epidermis or upper dermis, so that the drug/active can participate directly in the microcirculation without having to pass through the stratum corneum barrier.
