What is Biosphere 2?

Biosphere 2, built in the desert north of Tucson, Arizona, is a miniature artificial ecosystem, so named because the Earth itself is called Biosphere 1. It was initiated by former U.S. football player John Allen and financed by a consortium of several companies, and was commissioned by Space Biosphere Ventures at a cost of $150 million over eight years.

September 26, 1991, four men and four women *** eight researchers first stationed in Biosphere 2, June 26, 1993, out of the *** 21 months, in their respective fields of research have accumulated a wealth of scientific data and practical experience. After evaluating the first results and improving their techniques, four men and three women*** from five countries, namely, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Nepal, Yugoslavia and the United States of America, moved in for a second stay on March 6, 1994, and left in January 1995 after 10 months of work. During this period, they carried out extensive and systematic scientific research on the atmosphere, water and waste recycling, and food production. Biosphere 2 is the world's largest closed artificial ecosystem. It allows mankind to study ecology on a holistic level for the first time, and thus opens up new avenues for understanding the processes of ecological change that are currently taking place on a global scale in the Earth's biosphere. More importantly, it will serve as the first terrestrial simulator of a permanent biologically regenerative biosafety system, with potential applications for future extraterrestrial settlement and manned exploration of the universe

But the program proved to be a failure

But the facts show that the Biosphere 2 concept was unrealistic. In January 1993, more than a year after eight scientists entered Biosphere 2, the carbon in the soil reacted with oxygen to form carbon dioxide, and some of the carbon dioxide reacted with calcium in the concrete used to build Biosphere 2 to form calcium carbonate, causing the oxygen content to drop from 21 percent to 10 percent. The oxygen content dropped from 21% to 14%; the carbon dioxide content soared. Another accident is, "Biosphere No." after three years of operation, which the nitric oxide content increased to 79 percent, enough to make the body's ability to synthesize vitamin B12 is weakened, endangering the brain's health.

Scientists also found that, in addition to the vine plants are more prosperous, all by pollen propagation of plants are extinct, the tree is also shaking; insects, in addition to termites, cockroaches and caddisflies, almost all dead, man-made marine biological survival is slightly better than land; man-made deserts due to the lack of control of rainfall, turned into a grassy area; "Biosphere 2" lower layer of the temperature of the "Biosphere 2" and the "Biosphere 2". "The temperatures in the lower levels were again much lower than predicted, and Columbia University took over Biosphere 2 on January 19, 1996, in a bid to protect the planet.

Science has once again proved that the Earth is the only planet that harbors life. more than two billion years, the living creatures on the Earth multiply, the survival of the good and the bad, and the survival of about millions of species of animals - human beings from the birth of the clothing, food, housing, transportation and economic activities, none of them do not rely on the planet, the Earth's forests, lakes, grasslands, coasts, and other natural systems, is the basic environment for the survival of mankind. At present, mankind has not been able to use artificial methods to maintain the vitality of the Earth, no one knows how to build a detached from the natural environment of the Earth, but also allows human beings to recuperate ecosystem.
