Hyogo Prefectural Particle Thread Medical Center was founded in 2001 and is dedicated to eradicating cancer, a disease that plagues mankind. Particle ray therapy is divided into two types: proton ray therapy and heavy particle ray (carbon-ion) ray therapy, and both methods can be performed at the hospital, with doctors choosing the more appropriate treatment for the patient. The hospital has successfully treated 4,513 cancer patients over a 10-year period from 2003 to February 2012.

The goal of the Minami Tohoku Hospital Cancer Proton Therapy Center is to establish proton therapy, which is highly lethal to cancer cells and less damaging to normal tissues, as a routine treatment for cancer in the future. The hospital uses this treatment not only for early-stage cancer, but also for patients with advanced cancer.
