The Cancer Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University is a long-established and reputable specialized hospital for cancer in China, and is the only Grade 3A hospital for cancer in Shanghai. Its predecessor was the Sino-British Radium Institute, which was formally established on March 1, 1931, and has a history of eighty years so far. Before the liberation of China, the hospital was the only tumor hospital in China.
As early as 1929, Sacred Heart Hospital (located in the city's Yangpu District Ningguo Road), some Chinese doctors in order to relieve the pain of compatriots suffering from cancer, in order to raise a sum of money to buy equipment for the treatment of tumors, they approached the chairman of the Sino-Belgian Gung Ho Education and Charity Committee, J. Hers; Hers, a Belgian, said that he was willing to use Gung Ho to carry out radiation therapy with radium ingots in Sacred Heart Hospital, and so on. In this way, by the China-Belgium Gung Ho Education and Charity Committee funds, Mr. Hers is responsible for the purchase of 0.978 grams of saw bloom, two deep X-ray treatment machine and an X-ray diagnostic machine in Belgium, a Chinese physician and a Belgian physician responsible for the diagnosis and treatment.
The 1931 meeting of the Sacred Heart Hospital decided that the Sino-Belgian Saw Chain Treatment Institute would be formally listed on March 1 of that year, which was attached to the Sacred Heart Hospital and was managed by Sacred Heart Hospital President Lu Bohong, Director of the Hospital, Lu Yinkeng, and Director of the Medical Department, Song Wusheng.
From 1936, the Sino-Belgian Saw Chain Treatment Center was established as an independent unit under the direct leadership of the Sino-Belgian Gung Ho Committee, with its site temporarily located in the Sacred Heart Hospital, and employing H. Vassilisdis, the clinical director of the Institute of Cancer Research at the University of Louvain, Belgium, as the medical director and Sung Woo-sang as the general director, with only two physicians and more than 20 beds at that time.
In October 1937, after the Spoon υ 13 Incident, the Japanese invaded Shanghai, the Sacred Heart Hospital and the Sino-Belgian Anchor Bloom Treatment Center temporarily moved to the French Concession Qiqi Road 45 (now Yueyang Road 45), in September 1938 moved to Xiafei Road 1729, (now Huaihai Road 1733). 1939 June Sino-Belgian Gung Ho Committee will be the Radium Ingot Treatment Center transferred to the Belgian Medical Association in China at no cost. In June 1939, the Sino-Belgian GEF Committee transferred the Radium Institute to the Belgian Medical Association in China without compensation, and the representative of the Medical Association, La Fontaine (M. ]. In January 1940, the Belgian Medical Association in China entrusted the management of the Sino-Belgian Radium Institute to the Catholic Church, and the Missionnaires Francisc-ainesde Marie arranged for the Sisters of the Institute to take charge of the Institute, with the Frenchman Genin as the Acting Superintendent and Dr. Tang Yuhan as the Deputy Superintendent. Dr. Tang Yuhan was the vice-president, and Dr. Xu Jingbo was the radiologist.
On December 8, 1941, Japan declared war on Britain and the United States, the Pacific War broke out, the Belgians were imprisoned by the Japanese in the concentration camps, the director of the Sino-Belgian Radium Institute was changed to Tang Yuhan, the funding can only be resolved by the Institute itself, the hospital had 55 beds, more than 50 employees, the situation has been maintained until August 1945, the victory in the war.
In September 1945, Tang Yuhan resigned, and a joint meeting of representatives of the Ministry of Health of the Kuomintang and representatives of the Belgian Medical Association in China decided to hire a radiologist, Dr. Xu Jingbo, to be the director of the hospital.
In 1946, the Belgian Medical Association in China handed over the Sino-Belgian Radium Institute to the government of the Kuomintang, and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of China sent Dr. Jin Baoxin to preside over the management committee of the Radium Institute. Later, in order to take into account the friendly relations between China and Belgium, it was decided to set up a board of directors, with the Belgian ambassador to China, Le Ghai t, as the honorary chairman of the board of directors, and the director of the Department of Health, Liu Ruiheng, as the chairman of the board of directors, and the executive directors, such as Sung Woo-sang, Wang Dai-bao, and Do Vleeschowver, etc. The hospital's part of the funds was restored to be provided by the Sino-Belgian Gung Hoi Committee. In October 1947, President Xu Jingbo was invited to visit the United States 7 by the Council to hire Wu Huanxing as medical director until May 1949 Shanghai liberation.
In September 1949, the Board of Directors of the China-Beijing Anchor Bloom Treatment Center reappointed Wu Huanxing as Director and Song Wusheng as Vice Director.
In February 1950, the Shanghai Municipal Military Management Committee took over the China-Belgium Anchor Chain Treatment Hospital, which came under the leadership of the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Health, and appointed Comrade Zhu Zhixian as the military representative and Comrade Ye Xianyao as the leader of the takeover team, and Comrade Wang Ping was appointed as the first secretary of the Party branch in August of the same year. 1951, the China-Belgium Anchor Plating Treatment Hospital was renamed as Shanghai Anchor Chain Treatment Hospital in July of the same year, and in 1952, Director Wu Huanxing joined the medical team of the Anti-USA and North Korea Assistance Group. In 1952, President Wu Huanxing joined the medical team of the Anti-American aid to Korea, and then was transferred to work in Beijing. 1954 January, the Shanghai Anchor Key Treatment Hospital was transferred to the First Medical College of Shanghai and named as the Tumor Hospital of the First Medical College of Shanghai.
Song Wusheng was appointed as the president in August 1955, and Chen Ying took over the presidency in 1958, and the Shanghai Cancer Research Institute was established by Prof. Gu Suiyue, the vice president and a famous tumor pathologist, on the basis of the Department of Pathology, which was located in the Cancer Hospital.
Since 1959, the hospital began to recruit and train postgraduates, and trained 8 postgraduates in various disciplines before the Cultural Revolution.
In 1960, the hospital moved to No.270, Dong'an Road.
In 1966, when the Cultural Revolution began, the medical work of the hospital was interfered with considerably, and the scientific research and teaching work came to a halt.
In 1968, the hospital was transferred to Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau and renamed as Shanghai Cancer Hospital. In the following year, Shanghai Tumor Prevention and Control Office was set up in the hospital, and cancer prevention and publicity were carried out.
After the Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in 1978, the work of the hospital has been rapidly changing and progressing by leaps and bounds. In 1978, the hospital resumed enrollment of master's degree students in tumor pathology. In the following year, the hospital resumed the leadership of Shanghai First Medical College, continued to be an affiliated hospital, and resumed full-scale enrollment and training of postgraduate students, but the Shanghai Cancer Research Institute and the Office of Cancer Prevention and Control were detached from the hospital and directly under the leadership of the Health Bureau.
In 1985, the Cancer Hospital set up a research institute named Shanghai Medical University Cancer Research Institute to carry out clinical and basic research work, and in 1991, the hospital sponsored the academic journal "Chinese Cancer Journal", and in 1993, the hospital was approved by the Health Bureau to become the Shanghai Mammary Tumor Prevention and Control Center. In addition, the hospital was recognized by the Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau as the Shanghai Clinical Pathology Quality Control Center and the Shanghai Radiation Therapy Quality Control Center in 1994 and 1999, respectively; in 1995, oncology pathology was listed as a leading specialty in Shanghai.

The hospital now has 1428 employees on duty. There are 331 professional physicians, among whom 35, or 37.2%, are full senior titles and 103 are associate senior titles; 24 are doctoral supervisors and 52 are master's supervisors. The proportion of postgraduate students among the physicians is 72.5%, and 38% of the physicians have overseas study background.
