Port city in Khuzestan Province, Iran. Geographic location 30.4 degrees north latitude, 48.3 degrees east longitude. Located in the southwestern tip of Iran, the Arabian River on the island of Abadan, about 50 kilometers from the Persian Gulf, Iran's oil exports distribution center, the Iranian state-run oil company headquarters location. Population of about 300,000, is the fifth largest city in Iran.
As early as the Abbasid era of the Arabian Empire, Abadan was a trading town, known for its salt production and mat weaving. 14th century, the size of the village was reduced to a small village, and after maneuvering with the Turks, it was returned to Persia in 1847. After the Anglo-Persian Oil Company set up a pipeline terminal refinery here in 1909, it grew rapidly and became a modern city. 1951 Iran nationalized its oil industry, forcibly withdrawing all refining equipment and halting oil deliveries to Britain for four years. In 1955, the British government finally agreed to relinquish ownership, and during the Iran-Iraq war in 1980, the city of Abadan, located on the border between Iran and Iraq, suffered severe damage until 1990, when it gradually recovered.
The economy is based on oil refining and transportation. It is the terminus of the pipeline in the oil belt of southwestern Iran and the starting point of the pipeline to Tehran and Shiraz. It is the world's largest oil storage and refining base, with the largest refinery in Iran, the Abadan Refinery, and the Petrochemical Plant. The Abadan refinery produces 60 percent of the country's output, mostly for export, but the Iran-Iraq war caused a decline in production. The port of Abadan has played an important role in Iran's oil exports, especially before the 1950s when it was the main port for Iran's oil exports, and in the late 1950s when it was shifted to the port of Mashhur, but the port of Abadan still plays an important role. The port of Abadan has modern equipment and ships can be loaded directly at the wharf. There is an international airport on the territory. There is also the Abadan Technical Institute
