Once upon a time, the city of Chengdu was smaller than it is now. Maybe twice as small, maybe more. In the history that only a few surviving old Chengduians once saw with their own eyes, the city was surrounded by tall, spectacular ancient walls. Those who entered and those who left the city had to pass through four gates named southeast, northwest and north. Even today's Chengduites still habitually refer to the west side of the city as the West Gate and the east side as the East Gate, even though no such gate exists.

Early this morning, sunlight from the clouds shone through the fog that had not yet cleared and illuminated the walls of Chengdu's West Gate. It was not yet apparent how hot it would be, but it was stifling, and there was not a breath of cool air. Under the city wall, the crowd moved at a slow pace. The traffic on this major transportation route is often filled with traders in their carts and poor people looking for a chance to feed their families, but now even city dwellers who have lived in Chengdu for half of their lives are joining in the procession. They carried parcels on their backs, brought their families with them, and headed in the direction of the outskirts of the city. The merchants seemed to understand why these different people were walking on the same road as themselves, because they had also heard, or read in the newspapers, that the Japanese had captured the Shanhaiguan Pass at the beginning of the year, and that they were no longer satisfied with the land of "pseudo-Manchuzhou", and that after capturing the pass, they were going to take over the city of Chengdu. ......
