Overview of Shanghai Blood Center

Shanghai Blood Center is located at 1191 Hongqiao Road, Changning District, adjacent to the prosperous Hongqiao Economic Development Zone, covering an area of 13,320 square meters, and is the only blood collection and supply service institution in the urban area, integrating blood collection, preparation, supply, scientific research and teaching. In 1988, the Center was named by the World Health Organization as the World Health Organization Blood Transfusion Collaboration Center, and in 1999, through an interest-free loan from the Finnish government, it constructed a 16-story comprehensive business building with a floor area of 20,000 square meters, and was equipped with advanced and professional instruments and equipments.  Shanghai Blood Center is responsible for providing clinical blood for 160 medical units in the city and guaranteeing safe blood supply. In addition to setting up 13 fixed blood donation points, the center also parks mobile blood donation vehicles in downtown streets to provide year-round blood donation services. Every year, the center collects nearly 280,000 units of blood and supplies about 800,000 units of blood and blood component products to the clinics, with a blood component separation rate of more than 96% and a clinical blood component transfusion rate of 99%, which is up to the international advanced level. Meanwhile, the center also carries out transfusion-related services such as identification and matching of difficult blood groups, examination of hemolytic disease in newborns, identification of transfusion reaction, diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis, and tissue matching. In addition, the center is also the "China Blood Stem Cell Donor Database Shanghai Designated HLA Tissue Matching Laboratory", the "National Basic Immunohematology Course" training base, and a clinical teaching base of the Shanghai Second Medical University, and also cooperates with the Graduate School of Fudan University, East China Normal University and the Graduate School of Fudan University. It is also a clinical teaching base of Shanghai Second Medical University, and a postgraduate training base jointly established with Graduate School of Fudan University and School of Life Sciences of East China Normal University.  The center always takes blood safety as the highest purpose, guarantees blood quality as the first duty, focuses on blood donors and recipients, strictly implements relevant national laws and regulations, industrial standards and technical operation norms, and took the lead in establishing ISO quality management system in the field of blood transfusion in China in 1999.  In order to promote the development of scientific research on blood transfusion, the Center established the Shanghai Blood Transfusion Research Institute in 1985. Every year, 1 million RMB is earmarked for the development of scientific research on blood transfusion. The Institute consists of 5 research laboratories, with 12 researchers with senior and deputy senior titles. Over the years, the Institute has applied for 120 grants for various scientific research projects, including 2 grants from the National Natural Fund, 6 national patents, 1 invention patent and 5 utility model patents: 338 papers have been published in domestic and foreign magazines, and 19 scientific research projects have been undertaken at present.  In recent years, the party committee of the center firmly political objectives, leading the majority of party members and workers to keep pace with the times and deepen the reform. The construction of spiritual civilization and cohesion project, standardized service and quality service, as the cultural construction project of this excellent team. For 15 consecutive years, it has been awarded the title of civilized unit of Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau; in 2005, it was awarded the title of spiritual civilized unit of Shanghai Municipal Health System and spiritual civilized unit of Changning District; for three consecutive years, it has been awarded the title of "Top Ten "****building unit of Hongqiao Community Spiritual Civilization Construction; it has been awarded the title of "Model Point for the Creation of Female Talent Project" by Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau. The center's labor union was awarded the Advanced Staff Home of Shanghai Medical Union System; the blood collection room of the center was awarded the title of Shanghai's "March 8 Red Flag Collective".
