Silica gel is a granular, glassy, porous form of silica prepared from synthetic sodium silicate. Silica gel is harder than common household gels like gelatin and agar. It is a naturally occurring mineral that is refined and processed into either granular or bead-like forms. As a desiccant, it has an average pore size of 2.4 nanometers and has a strong affinity for water molecules.
Silica gel is most often encountered in everyday life in a small (typically beads 2 x 3 cm) file package. In this form it is used as a desiccant to control local humidity to avoid damage to some goods or degradation. Since silica gel can add chemical indicators and absorb moisture very well, silica gel packets usually bear a warning to users not to eat the contents.
