The difference between titanium-magnesium alloy and aluminum alloy

The difference between the two is in the composition and density, mechanical properties, processing difficulty and cost, corrosion resistance, application areas.

1, composition and density: titanium-magnesium alloy is mainly composed of titanium and magnesium and other alloying elements, has a lower density, usually lighter than aluminum alloys, while maintaining a high strength-to-weight ratio. Aluminum alloy is mainly composed of aluminum and other alloying elements such as copper, magnesium, manganese, silicon, etc., with lower density than steel, but higher than titanium-magnesium alloy.

2, mechanical properties: titanium-magnesium alloy has excellent strength, fatigue resistance, corrosion resistance and toughness, suitable for use in extreme environments or occasions requiring durability, such as aerospace, medical equipment and high-performance sports equipment. Aluminum alloy, although the strength and hardness is slightly inferior to titanium-magnesium alloy, but still has high mechanical properties, good processing performance, high hardness and wear resistance, widely used in construction, automotive, marine, electronic product shells and other fields.

3, processing difficulty and cost: titanium-magnesium alloy processing difficulty is relatively large, because of its high melting point, welding and molding process is relatively complex, resulting in higher production costs. Aluminum alloy processing performance is excellent, easy casting and machining, relatively low melting point, the cost is cheaper compared to titanium-magnesium alloy.

4, corrosion resistance: titanium-magnesium alloy has excellent corrosion resistance, especially in the marine environment, almost no corrosion phenomenon. Aluminum alloy through the oxidation process can form a dense oxide film to improve corrosion resistance, but compared to titanium-magnesium alloy, its corrosion resistance is slightly inferior.

5, application areas: titanium-magnesium alloy because of its superior performance, mostly used in high-end products, such as aerospace parts, medical equipment, high-performance bicycle frame, diving equipment. Aluminum alloy is widely used in construction, car body, rail transportation, household appliances, electronic equipment shells, etc., covering a wider range of areas, a wide range of products.
