Stories from the Long March

1. A Monument

A long Red Army column marched through the icy fields of the Yunzhong Mountains against the chaotic and misty flying snow. The bitter cold had frozen Yunzhongshan into a great ice heap, and the fierce wind howled like a wolf to conquer the poorly equipped column.

The general's horse had long since given way to the wounded to ride. The general marched with the soldiers through the snow and ice. From time to time he choked and coughed on the cold wind. He had to lead the group to push forward and open a passage for the following troops.

Waiting for them will be a very harsh environment and a very cruel battle, may not be able to eat for three days, may have to sleep in the snow nest, may have to walk a hundred dozens of miles a day, may ...... oh, may be too much, how is the quality of this team? Can withstand the severe test?

The general pondered ......

The party in front of him suddenly slowed down its march, and there were many people gathered around, not knowing what to do.

The general shouted as he walked, Don't stop, move forward quickly!

The general's guards came back and told him, "...... ahead ...... froze to death a man ...... "

The general froze, said nothing, and headed that way. The wind and snow were too strong. He stumbled a little in his steps, his eyes a little disoriented.

A frozen old warrior sat leaning against a bare tree trunk, motionless, like a statue. His body is covered with snow, you can see the calm, natural look, but for a moment can not recognize the face, half of the rolled dry cigarettes are still sandwiched between the middle finger and forefinger of the right hand, the fire has been extinguished by the wind and snow.

He stretched out his hand slightly forward, as if to borrow a fire from his comrade ...... "What? His clothes so thin and worn? Like leaves, like foil thinly attached to the body ...... Where are his warm clothes? Why have they not been issued?

The general's face was suddenly cloudy, the muscles at the corners of his mouth visibly twitched, and he suddenly turned his head and roared to those around him, "Call the Quartermaster General to come, the old man wants ...... a gust of wind and snow engulfing his words." His red eyes, like a furious leopard, looked terrible.

No one answered him or moved away ......

"Do you hear me? Guardsman! Get the Quartermaster General up here on the run!" The muscles in the general's cheeks shook dramatically, whether from the cold or from anger.

Finally, someone whispered to the general, "This is the Quartermaster General ......"

The general's gesture of about to lash out suddenly stopped. He stood transfixed for a full minute. Snowflakes fell silently on his face, dissolving into glittering teardrops ...... He exhaled y and slowly raised his right hand to his eyebrow, giving a solemn military salute ......

Snow Bigger, the wind is more wild. The snow soon covered the body of the Quartermaster General, and he was transformed into a crystalline monument ......

The General said nothing, and burrowed with great strides into the pervasive snow and wind, and he heard countless heavy but firm footsteps saying, "If victory does not belong to such a team, who else will it belong to it?"

2. A Day at Jiejinshan Mountain

Shu Qixing, a 15-year-old woodcutter, was tortured by the landlord's family. That fall, the Red Army came to his hometown, Baoxing County, at the southern foot of Jiefangshan Mountain.

The Fourth Red Army set up local party organizations and soviets in Baoxing, fighting the landlords, dividing up the land, and organizing local armed forces and guerrilla groups. Shu Qixing saw them give the poor people food, better than staying in the landlord's house, so he secretly followed the team.

In the spring of 1936, the Red Army moved to the Tibetan area of northern Kham, and Shu Qixing followed the team over Jiejinshan Mountain. They went over the snow-covered mountain in the season of planting bracts. In the morning, they started to climb the mountain before dawn, and the snowy mountain was very difficult to climb, so they walked very fast until it was dark.

The comrades used cypress bark and dry bamboo to tie up torches, cut bamboo poles and branches to make crutches, and used the dry sea pepper sent by the Tibetans to make cold food, and when they were hungry, they could only eat a mouthful of snow. We encourage each other, help each other, hard to climb up.

The higher you go, the more dangerous the road, the greater the plateau reaction, the more dizzy people are, look up, there are people on the top of the head, look down, there are people under the soles of the feet. At this time people have gone to the limit of fatigue, but whoever sits down, who will never get up.

The weather in the snowy mountains is like a child's face, unpredictable. At the beginning of the sun is still shining, suddenly can be a storm, hail. The first time the soldiers encountered hail weather inexperienced, all the hat on the head, the result of the hat was smashed all the broken and tattered.

Later, they used a washbasin on top of their heads, pottery, copper, hailstones hitting the top of the "ding ding ding ding" like music. Sometimes we did not have time to prepare, walnut-sized hailstones came down on our heads.

Everyone had to use their hands to cover their faces to walk, hail on the hands, raw pain, raw pain. Some soldiers were caught off guard, fell and slipped down the mountain, and they were never found.

In the late afternoon, the team reached the top of the mountain. Everyone was tired and happy, and took a long breath of relief. But the air was thin at the top of the mountain, so everyone continued down without daring to stop. In the evening, the company that Shu Qixing was following finally crossed Jiejinshan Mountain and arrived in Xiaojin County.

After descending the mountain, the company was suddenly attacked by the local Tusi army. The bullet entered his right elbow and penetrated his right shoulder, and several of his comrades were killed next to him. In order to recuperate, Shu Qixing was left behind. With 30 pounds of food issued by the company, he returned home.

3. Little Telegraphist

Wang Yuqing, 14, was working at the landlord's house when he heard someone say the Red Army was coming. The landlord viciously told him, "'Red Beard' kills people without blinking an eye, and specializes in eating children." At that time, the landlords called He Long's troops "red beards".

Wang Yuqing didn't believe it, so he went out to see what was going on, and he found that the Red Army was very kind and nice to the poor people, and very mean to the landlords. Wang Yuqing immediately went to sign up for the Red Army, and a few days later, he became a soldier in the Red Army radio station.

Wang Yuqing was very smart, plus he was modest to ask the old warriors for advice, to the army only a week, quickly learned the use of the radio, the chiefs like to send telegrams to him. On the march, He Long left the deepest impression on him.

Because of Wang Yuqing's skill and intelligence, He Long liked him very much and often gave him very important telegrams, and often flicked Wang Yuqing's head with his fingers to show his praise.

In the most difficult time of the march, He Long is still always in the queue, to give everyone a boost, we like to call him He Laozong, far away from the sound of his cheerful laughter, he also occasionally asked in a friendly tone of voice of the young soldiers: "bitter? Tired?"

On one occasion, Mr. He, who usually likes to joke around, looked very serious, and his two thick eyebrows were twisted into lumps. It turned out that Wang Yuqing received an urgent telegram and handed it to Mr. He, saying that Chiang had deployed heavy troops and airplanes to besiege the Red Army, which at this time had just seized the ferry, but there was no bridge on the river and the boats were few and small.

He was very anxious when he read it, the troops were his life. In the end, they came up with a way to cross the river with wooden rows instead of wooden boats, which was simple and time-saving. After crossing the river, Mr. He became talkative again.

Within a few days of entering the grassland, Wang Yuqing ran out of food. When the radio station's cook chief found out, he gave Wang Yuqing the only two handfuls of fried noodles he had. Wang Yuqing said he didn't want them and said to the squad leader, "If you give me the food, how will you tide over the difficulties?"

The squad leader said, "Let's take one step at a time. You are still young, it is the time to grow your body, your body needs this food, the road of revolution is still long, you must go out of the grassland!" Later they got separated, and Wang Yuqing never saw him again.

After a while, even wild vegetables could not be found. Many of his comrades fell down while walking, and the comrades around him, whether they knew them or not, helped to bury their newly sacrificed comrades. Watching his comrades fall down one by one, Wang Yuqing also lost confidence to get out of the grassland, and sat down by a ditch to rest.

Wang Yuqing, who hadn't eaten anything for four or five days, was dizzy and weak. Suddenly, he found that there are fish in the ditch, but he did not have the strength to go down to catch, even if he had the strength, but did not dare to go down, a lot of comrades in order to catch small fish caught in such a ditch, and never came out. There are out.

Just when Wang Yuqing despair, he suddenly thought of, military cap is not pinned on two sewing needles? Why not go fishing? He burned the needles red and bent them into hooks, tied on the line, and took his chances in the ditch. The sky is not the limit, he actually caught two small fish. He was so happy that the first thing he felt at the time was that he would live for a few more days.

Later, this method was borrowed by many comrades. They relied on this small fishhook, fishing while walking, finally, out of the grassland.

4, sitting in a basket over the rope bridge division

June 14, 1935, the Central Red Army and the Fourth Red Army in the town of Dawei division. The Third Red Army Regiment was entrusted with the task of maintaining transportation and meeting with the Fourth Red Army. Peng Dehuai personally led the eleventh regiment to the village of Weigu.

This is a village with high mountains and a big river. The bridge over the river had been destroyed by the enemy, and looking across the river, the ranks of the Red Army of the Fourth Front were coming this way.

The two sides are recognizable, but the other side still can't hear clearly when they try to shout. They threw stones at each other, wrapped notes around the stones, and agreed to build a suspension bridge here.

Hearing that there was a bridge in Eni upstream, Peng Dehuai came to Eni again. The rope bridge here was also damaged, the upper and lower two ropes, only one left, the opposite side of the river is the Red Army, the two sides are still following the method of Vigu, throwing stones to the other bank.

More than ten minutes later, received such a note: "I am Xu Xiangqian, leading a part of the Fourth Red Army arrived," and "We are a part of the Third Army Corps, here to meet you." Although contact was made, the two sides still could not speak or cross the river, and remained separated by the river.

Just when it was difficult, the Red Army soldiers were found in the woods on the riverbank. So a soldier of the Fourth Front Army sat in a basket and tied the basket to a rope, and slowly swung over from the other side of the river. Next came Xu Xiangqian, the commander-in-chief of the Fourth Front Army, and other soldiers and officers crossing over one after another. The two sides finally met successfully.

Two days later, the suspension bridge in Vigu was finally successfully built through the efforts of the Red Army's First Side Army and the Fourth Side Army***.

5, half a bowl of barley noodles

In the deserted meadow, the Red Army soldiers have only a little barley noodles as dry food.

Vice Chairman Zhou Enlai, like the soldiers, never ate more than a little barley flour, but also educated the soldiers, in order to get out of the grassland, north to fight against the Japanese, must be especially cherish food. The soldiers listened to his words, all the only barley flour in the grain bag, chained to the waist.

The barley flour is getting less and less, the soldiers can only use a little barley flour mixed in the wild vegetables to cook soup to drink.

He looked at Wu Kaisheng's waxen face and said in a serious tone, "This is a revolution!" Wu Kaisheng said with tears in his eyes, "As long as I have a breath, I will follow you out of the grassland and revolutionize to the end!"

That night there was another storm, and the tent made of sheets naturally couldn't block the wind and rain. The soldiers were drenched. Vice Chairman Zhou ordered the soldiers to rest in the tent he used as his office.

Everyone refused to go for fear of interfering with his work.

He braved the rain himself and said, "If you don't go, my heart is restless." Vice Chairman Zhou's words were like a fire baking and warming the hearts of the soldiers.

This way for a few days, the grassland is still boundless. Barley flour eaten up, wild vegetables eaten up, the army horse also killed to eat. Soldiers had to burn the belt to eat, and even swallowed the paper they brought with them to feed their hunger, the Red Army was in great trouble.

Zhou vice-chairman of the order of the only remaining half bowl of barley flour all distributed to everyone to soak water to drink: "Then what do you eat?" The guards were anxious.
