Canberra

Commonwealth of Australia The capital city of Canberra is located in the north-eastern part of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) in the foothill plains of the Australian Alps, spanning both sides of the Molongoro River. 1824 saw the establishment of a settlement known as Camberley, which was renamed Canberra in 1836, and in 1899 it was transferred to the ACT following the formation of the Commonwealth District. 1913 saw the start of the construction of a new city, which was officially relocated from Melbourne in 1927. In 1927, the capital was officially moved to Canberra, and the federal parliament was officially moved here from Melbourne, with a population of about 310,000 (June 2000).

Canberra was designed by the American architect Burley Griffin. The city is divided into two main parts by the lake named after Griffin, with Metropolitan Hill to the north and Capital Hill to the south, which gradually extends in all directions from this center. With the new Parliament Building, completed in May 1988, as the centerpiece, the south side houses the main government offices and embassies and consulates of various countries, and is the central area for politics and diplomacy. On the north side, residences, department stores, and theaters are arranged in a well-ordered, peaceful, and secluded manner, making it obvious that this is a residential living area.

Lake Griffin, which was built artificially in 1963, has a circumference of 35 kilometers and an area of 704 hectares, and the Commons Wells and Kings Bridges across Lake Griffin connect the north and south parts of the city. In the center of the lake, there is the "Captain Cook Fountain" built to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Captain Cook's landing, spraying water columns up to 137 meters high. There is a clock tower on Aspen Island in the lake. It was a gift from Britain to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of Canberra. One of the big bells weighs 6 tons, and the small one is only 7 kilograms, **** there are 53 of them.

The city is home to the Australian National University, St. John the Baptist Church, the Australian National War Memorial, the Canberra Institute of Technology and the Institute of Higher Education.

Flinders Street Station is the terminus for Melbourne's local train lines. There are trains to the state capitals and other major cities.

Highways

There are highways to all state capitals from Melbourne.

Internal Transportation

City Trains

Melbourne's main mode of transportation is the city train, which travels above ground most of the time. The train runs through major thoroughfares and major population centers, and because Melbourne's city center is a busy commercial center, many people use the train to get to work because they can't park their cars, and it's also the main mode of transportation for students.

The price of train tickets within Melbourne is based on zone and time of day, and tickets are valid for both trains and buses. Tickets are available from vending machines at the entrance to each station, and are usually divided into 2-hour passes (valid for 2 hours on all forms of inner-city transportation), all-day passes, monthly passes, and annual passes, with the longer the period of time you buy, the better the price ratio. In Melbourne, the main city area is divided into three zones, so if you travel across zones, the fare will increase.

Trams

Although no longer a major mode of transportation, trams remain today because of their unusual significance. There are free streetcars around Melbourne's city center for tourists to see the sights of the city, with full-time guides on hand to explain the sights, as well as a number of pamphlets and maps describing the places to visit in Melbourne.

Trams

Melbourne's city trams can be divided into two types, green and orange. There are simple signs at the stops, and when you ride, you get on from the back and buy a ticket on the bus, which costs A$0.60 for each zone in the city; in addition, there are also tickets that allow you to travel freely on the trams and buses within a day, which costs A$2, and when you get off, you ring the bell and get off at a reliable stop. It is characterized by a slower speed, but has many convenient stops and covers almost the entire city. The bi-directional Circle City Tram runs from 10:00-18:00, every 15 minutes. The Tourist Office has a free Tramwag Map, a city tram route map, available.

The main routes within the city are the boulevards of Flinders, Collins, Bourke and La Trobe, which run parallel east-west, and the north-south roads of Spencer, William, Elizabeth and Swanston, which run to the outskirts of the city.

Taxis

Melbourne's local cabs have a local flavor. There are usually cab stands on street corners, empty cars waiting to greet you in front of hotels, and cabs soliciting passengers. The basic fare is A$2, plus A$0.60 per kilometer thereafter.

Trivia: Melbourne's trams, trains and buses*** use a ticket, the Metcard. Fares vary according to distance, and the tickets are interesting: two-hour tickets (you can go anywhere in those two hours), one-day tickets, one-week tickets and passes.
