Huawei first mentioned F5.5G How can optical networks help to promote the transformation of digital intelligence?

While wireless networks are evolving from 5G to 6G, fixed networks are also moving forward from F5G. on April 27, during Huawei's analyst conference, Huawei proposed an initiative to develop F5.5G.

The so-called F5G, which is the 5th generation fixed networks technology (The 5th generation fixed networks), is also known as the F5G all-optical network, which stands for gigabit fiber network. Similar to 5G, F5G is a next-generation communications standard proposed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute to represent the generation of fixed network communications.

5G and F5G complement each other and play a connectivity role for different scenarios. 5G is suitable for mobility, multi-connectivity scenarios, such as drones and Telematics, while F5G is suitable for stationary, large bandwidth, low latency, and high security scenarios such as industrial internet, data center interconnections, and enterprise campuses.

In 2020, the European Telecommunications Standards Institute ETSI formally released F5G, which solved the problem of fragmentation and generational ambiguity in the fixed network industry, and the global fixed network industry entered the fast lane, and in the future, with the widespread application of XR, holography, and naked-eye 3D services in the home and enterprise side, the continuous upgrading of network reliability and other needs in the industrial field, and the green and low-carbon sustainable development, all of which are on F5G fixed networks. The F5G fixed network will have to meet new requirements.

Therefore, Wang Tao, Huawei's Managing Director and Director of the ICT Infrastructure Business Management Committee, pointed out at the analyst conference, "After the F5G standard was formulated, the broadband communications industry developed at a high speed. In the home environment, gigabit access has become a universal service in China and many developed countries. Huawei's FTTR (Fiber to the Room), FTTO (Fiber to the Office), and FTTM (Fiber to the Machine) solutions have enhanced the optical network experience and expanded application scenarios. Facing 2025, in order to meet the needs of home scenarios, commercial scenarios, and industrial scenarios in terms of bandwidth, latency, access density, and other aspects, the industry needs to *** work together to promote the continued evolution of F5G, which is the original purpose of our F5.5G initiative."

Fixed network evolution: from F5G to F5.5G

In the field of communications, fixed-network communications and mobile communications are the main means of connectivity, and in Huawei's view, connectivity is still a sunrise industry, the foundation for building a smart world, and in the digital era, connectivity breeds huge market space.

Taking the fixed network as an example, according to Ernst & Young's Global Optical Communications Industry White Paper, the global optical communications industry reached 1.4 trillion in 2020, and will reach 3.2 trillion in 2025. It is foreseeable that the F5G Gigabit optical network will continue to empower thousands of industries and drive trillions of dollars of market space.

To this end, Huawei wants to unite the industrial chain to continue to promote the fixed communications field continued to evolve forward, said Wang Tao: "By 2025, we hope that the fixed network to evolve to F5.5G. F5.5G the biggest feature, is to realize 10 Gbps anywhere (10 Gbps ubiquitous) in the home broadband scenarios, the 10 Gbps anywhere in the field of fixed network refers to the availability of the 10 Gbps anywhere. Gbps anywhere refers to the obtainable rate, and its peak rate has to be further pushed up to 50G before it can be realized. And this 10G is 10G for both uplink and downlink, which can significantly improve the home broadband user experience."

Specifically, what are the technical and application level enhancements of F5.5G compared to F5G?F5.5G continues to enhance the three capabilities of F5G with the addition of three new capability dimensions, thereby enhancing the benefits in four areas.

One is the introduction of next-generation technologies such as Wi-Fi 7, 50G PON, 800G, etc., and the home access bandwidth has been increased from 1Gbps to 10Gbps everywhere; the second is the network capability has been upgraded from telecom-grade to industrial-grade, the network latency has been reduced to microseconds to meet the very low latency requirement needed for the control of industrial robots, and the network availability has been increased from 99.99% to 99.9999%. network availability from 99.99% to 99.9999%, to meet the high reliability needs of high-frequency scheduling of the power grid; third, from optical communications to optical sensing, through the fiber optic scattering effect to achieve vibration, stress, temperature sensing, accuracy to the meter level; and fourth, the use of optical technology's low-energy characteristics, so that the network energy efficiency to improve the 10-fold.

This means that in the F5.5G era, the speed, quality, and efficiency of connectivity will be further improved, and the evolution requires the support of the entire industry chain, including device suppliers, equipment providers, operators, and industrial organizations.

At the analyst conference, ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute), China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom, Globe Telecom, MTN and Huawei jointly launched the F5G Industry Evolution and Development Initiative (F5G IDI), which calls on industry to ****together promote the direction of the F5G evolution and the definition of standards.

New Infrastructure to Accelerate the Digital Economy

F5G and F5.5G, as network infrastructures, are important pedestals for digitalization, and are closely related to the national strategy of "Double Gigabit". 2021, the "Gigabit Optical Network" will be further developed. In 2021, the "gigabit optical network" is further emphasized, and the relevant report clearly requires to increase the construction of 5G network and gigabit optical network, and enrich the application scenarios. At the same time, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology quickly issued a "double gigabit" network co-development action plan (2021-2023), the gigabit optical network and 5G and called "double gigabit".

Among them, F5G, F5.5G represents the latest generation of gigabit optical network, the development of gigabit optical network can help the growth of digital economy. World Bank research shows that every 10% increase in broadband penetration drives GDP growth of 1.38% on average. According to the White Paper on China's Digital Economy Development and Employment 2019, China's 180 million core kilometers of fiber optic cable networks have supported the development of a $31.3 trillion digital economy.

Specifically in application scenarios, digital upgrades in homes, parks, smart manufacturing, industrial areas, medical areas, data centers, and other digital upgrades require stronger optical network support.

For example, AR/VR is moving from the life entertainment field into part of the industrial field, the bandwidth demand for highly immersive experience and interactive VR has exceeded 1Gbps, the bandwidth demand for high-definition medical AR assistance has reached 10Gbps, and the bandwidth demand for holographic projection for industrial design is now more than 1G, and in the future, it can be as high as 1T. regardless of whether it is for the home or the enterprise, the F5.5G On the basis of F5G Gigabit coverage, technical innovation can be used to provide users with 10Gbps Everywhere and peak 50Gbps experience in end Wi-Fi coverage, home and enterprise access, and bandwidth transmission to meet bandwidth demand.

In addition to transmission advantages, fiber optic networks are also showing more potential. Wang Tao explained that through research, it has been found that the effects of Rayleigh scattering, Brillouin scattering, and Raman scattering of optical fiber can be used as a means of environmental monitoring, such as detecting vibration, stress, and temperature. Huawei has already made attempts in the oil and gas pipeline industry. Through the deployment of optical sensing monitoring units, it can be used to locate construction, landslides, and other situations at the meter level according to changes in the environmental vibration around the pipeline, combined with algorithms, and the accuracy of event recognition reaches 99%, and in the future, it can also further improve the positioning accuracy to 1 meter, so that intelligent unmanned inspection of oil and gas pipelines can be realized with optical sensing and visual management. In the future, light perception technology will be more widely used in fire, earthquake warning, gas, water quality detection and other scenes.

"Global Optical Communication Industry White Paper" points out that, in order to intelligent manufacturing, for example, F5G Gigabit optical network will be a powerful impetus to the transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry, according to calculations, F5G Gigabit optical network per 1 million inputs, will pry about 1.46 billion industrial Internet market; in order to the big data industry, for example, the input of the F5G Gigabit optical network will be further beneficial to the rack expansion of data centers, according to Ernst & Young estimates, the F5G Gigabit optical network per 1 million inputs, will pry about 146 million industrial Internet market. According to Ernst & Young estimates, F5G Gigabit optical network per 1 million input, supporting the growth of about 1900 square meters of data center scale.

With the evolution of F5G to F5.5G, fiber optic networks from Gigabit to 10 Gigabit, and from telecom grade to industrial grade, will provide pedestal support for the transformation of digital intelligence in thousands of industries. Huawei also puts forward the F5.5G development direction proposal, and advocates that the industry can reach **** knowledge on the F5G evolution direction as soon as possible.
