Three, Gamma Knife and Gyroscopic Knife Introduction
Gamma Knife is not really a traditional scalpel, the scientific name of Gamma Knife is called Gamma Ray Stereotactic Radiation Therapy System. It is stereotactic radiation therapy, which is more precise than ordinary radiotherapy. Gamma Knife is a very advanced radiation therapy equipment, it will be many beams of very fine gamma rays from different angles and directions of irradiation through the human body, and they will be in a point of convergence to form a focal point. Since the dose of each beam is very small, there is essentially no harmful damage to the body tissues it traverses. As long as the focal point is aimed at the diseased area, a high-dose field of excellent quality is formed to destroy the tumor tissue, and the purpose of surgical removal can be achieved. In other words, the treatment system replaces the surgical knife with gamma rays. It achieves the miraculous curative effect of no trauma, no bleeding, no infection, no pain; rapid, safe and reliable.
In 1951, Prof. leksell of Sweden put forward the theory of stereotactic radiation. 1968, the first generation of gamma knife static head developed by the Swedish company, so far there are more than 40 years of clinical use. Since 1993, the first first-generation gamma knife into China's clinical use so far, the major hospitals around the country has more than 300 sets of gamma knife in the treatment, for more than 300 million patients to relieve the pain of disease and save lives.
The gyroscopic knife, known as "gyroscopic rotating cobalt 60 radiosurgery system", is the latest generation of Gamma Knife. It was developed by Mr. Song Shipeng, the father of Chinese Gamma Knife, in 2006 in Shanghai, China, and won the second prize of Shanghai Scientific and Technological Progress. GyroKnife adopts the rotational principle similar to that of aerospace gyroscope, and installs the Cobalt 60 self-focusing radiation source on two gyroscopic structures rotating synchronously in the vertical direction, so it is also referred to as "GyroKnife" for short. The gyroscope rotates three times to focus the design of the formation of a unique dose field, radiotherapy gain ratio far more than previous generations of products, the efficacy of treatment can be greatly enhanced. The treatment process is non-invasive, painless, non-bleeding, requires no special pre-surgical preparation and medication, and is carried out when the patient is awake. The treatment is not affected by coexisting diseases such as age, heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and physical condition, and the whole process of treatment is controlled by computer, which is precise, safe, reliable and effective.
The gyroscopic knife has both the function of head treatment, can implement precise neurosurgical radiotherapy surgery, one-time destruction of the lesion tissue. It can also do body lesions large field scanning radiotherapy and precise three-dimensional conformal intensity adjustment treatment.
