The main role of plasticizers is to weaken the polymer intermolecular forces, reduce the melt temperature and melt viscosity, improve its molding and processing properties, in the use of temperature range, give plastic products flexibility and a variety of other necessary properties.

Plasticizers are often added to polymers to facilitate the handling of raw materials during the manufacturing process or to meet the needs of end-product applications. For example, plasticizers are typically added to polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which would otherwise be hard and brittle, making it soft and friable. This makes it suitable for products such as vinyl flooring, clothing, bags, hoses and wire coatings.
Plasticizers are also commonly added to concrete formulations to make them easier to use and pour fluids, which reduces water content. Similarly, they are often added to clays, mortars, solid rocket fuels and other pastes prior to molding and shaping. For these applications, plasticizers largely overlap with dispersants.
