The Second Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, formerly known as Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-sen Medical University, is a large-scale comprehensive hospital with a long history and a glorious revolutionary tradition. It was born in 1835, founded by Mr. ParKer, an American missionary, and is the earliest and longest continual western hospital in modern China; in 1886, the great revolutionary pioneer, Mr. Sun Yat-sen, under the name of "Yat-sen", studied medicine and engaged in revolutionary activities here, which became one of the fountainheads of China's democratic revolution. In October 2001, the former Sun Yat-sen University and Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences merged to form the new Sun Yat-sen University, and the hospital was renamed as the Second Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University (referred to as the Second Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University), which is divided into north and south hospitals, and the main hospital is located at No. 107, Yanjiang West Road, Guangzhou, covering an area of 32,150 square meters.
In this birthplace of Western medicine in China, Xie Zhiguang, Chen Xintao, Chen Yaozhen, Zhou Shoukai, Mao Wenwen, Qin Guangyu, Lin Shumo, Zhong Shifan and a large number of other renowned medical scientists and medical educators, who were courageous in their innovations and worked silently, wrote a glorious chapter in the history of the hospital: the first cystolithotomy in China, the first pathological dissection, the first ophthalmologic surgery, the first medical X-rays, the first medical international student and the first female medical student, the first medical journal, etc., were all born here.
After 172 years, the hospital has been constructed and developed into a large-scale comprehensive teaching hospital with a complete range of disciplines, advanced medical equipments and strong technical force. Among them, there are 16 first-level professional departments, 27 second-level professional departments, 12 medical and technical departments, 12 postdoctoral mobile stations and doctoral degree-granting points, and 27 master's degree-granting points, of which endocrine endocrinology, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, otorhinolaryngology, urology, and stomatology are the key disciplines of Guangdong Provincial Department of Education, and cardiovascular internal medicine, general surgery, orthopedics, stomatology, and otorhinolaryngology are the key specialties of the hospital.
In 1949, there were only 195 beds in the hospital, and the daily outpatient capacity was less than 220; in 1958, the number of beds increased to more than 500, and the average daily outpatient capacity was more than 1,500; in 1984, there were more than 1,000 employees in the hospital, of whom there were 7 professors and 28 associate professors; in 2005, there were 1,332 employees in the hospital, of whom 49 were professors and 135 associate professors, and there were 11 postdoctoral mobile stations and doctoral programs. Postdoctoral mobile station, 11 doctoral points, 19 doctoral supervisors, 27 master's points, more than 100 master's supervisors. 2006, the hospital opened 1,380 beds, the annual outpatient and emergency treatment volume of more than 1.3 million people, the annual discharge of more than 30,000 patients. The South Hospital District (No.33 Yingfeng Road, Haizhu District, Guangzhou) was opened in 2002, and it has made every effort to establish a large specialty and small comprehensive hospital district featuring general surgery, and to build a special brand of hepatobiliary surgery in South China.
In recent years, the level of construction of the hospital's academic disciplines has been continuously upgraded. 2002, the pediatric hematology department, China's first strain of human embryonic hematopoietic stem cell line was successfully established; the general surgery department, Dr. Song Erwei, in cooperation with Harvard University medical scientists, applied RNA intervention to inhibit viral infections in the research paper published in the July 2002 issue of the journal "Nature Medicine" and was selected by the U.S. journal "Science" as one of the most important researchers in the field of hepatobiliary surgery in the United States. Dr. Song Erwei's research paper on the application of RNA intervention to inhibit viral infections was published in Nature Medicine in July 2002, and was selected as one of the representative achievements of "the world's top ten scientific and technological advances in 2003" by the American Science magazine.
Over the years, the hospital has made important contributions to the development of modern medicine in China, and has won a series of honors: it has been continuously awarded as "Civilized Hospital of Guangdong Province", "Advanced Collective of the National Health System", "Advanced Collective of Baiqiu'en Style in Guangdong Province", and "Advanced Collective of Baiqiu'en Style in Guangdong Province".
