According to a May 22 report on the website of Deutsche Welle radio, the survey published by The Lancet compared health care and quality indexes in 195 countries around the world. Andorra, a small pocket-sized country located on the border of France and Spain, ranked first in the world in terms of health care and quality, with Iceland in second place. Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Australia, Finland, Spain, the Netherlands and Luxembourg were the next countries in the top ten.
All of the top 20 countries, except Japan and Australia, are Western European countries, the report said. The Lancet report noted that the quality and accessibility of health care around the world improved significantly between 1990 and 2015, but there is still a huge gap between the rich and the poor.
The research team ranked 32 non-terminal diseases according to their mortality rates, compared with progress in access to healthcare for those diseases, to create The Healthcare Access and Quality Index.
The report said the countries that have made the most progress in healthcare quality over the past 25 years include China, South Korea, Turkey, and Peru, with China ranking 62nd out of 195 countries in the world.
The Lancet's criteria for the 32 diseases include tuberculosis, respiratory infections, and measles, among other diseases.
